hello, I'm Everyone i'm in Quito...the backpacker scene here is great, if you manage to bypass the crack heads on the street around here!...the amount of stories we've heard...OMG...its sort of like Brixton without the soft edges
i was getting a cab today and i was like 'oh everyone keeps saying how dangerous Quito is' (you know...expecting a little reassurance..) and he was like, yes its very dangerous, be careful, don't get on buses that are busy and stay away from the police,, they're really bad!
not sure if i told you already but anyway!...when we were crossing the boarder from Peru into Ecuador we had to go through the boarder control on Peru side, and they asked for my yellow fever card, which was in my main pack ...and the guy police officer started saying 30 soles blah blah blah...so i just played dumb (pretty easy for me as you know) and was like No Habla Espanial!!!!..(not far from teh truth...the police guy just kept laughing at me and eventually let me through...the dutch guy we met wasn't so lucky and got hit for $5...
i mean why ask for yellow fever on the way out of a country....they were just getting bribes out of anyone who doesn't have it...
Top Tip... you can get yellow fever jabs free in Lima!!! in miraflores there was a clinic..so don't pay if you can help it if you ever come this way....(see just saved anyone coming over £45!)
oh and for the next boarder crossing saga..we were 20 minutes past the ecuador crossing then we got hauled over by the police...they started going through all the luggage and taking everyone bags off and making them open it up...we tagged getting off to check on our stuff but thankfully they didn't mess with ours....but a lot of people were taken off for questioning or had goods 'confiscated'...a few never got back on the bus, one old lady was in tears as she was escorted away and everyone was just looking in the other direction.....sad...just didn't know what to do!!!
some of the Irish boys we met were with this Canadian guy and when there bus got to Quito he realised that his bag wasn't on teh bus anymore....they didn't keep an eye on their luggage when they got pulled over...doh..Tip...get of and watch your stuff...those police don't care..
we've got two more days in quito, but we want to head out ASAP..Really a bit too dodgy....so much to do around here though..shame...i bought a poncho today (no sniggering) a mans top to go with my mans shoe size!!! and a lovely little painting that i'm going to send to my Nanna..
heading Wednesday to latacunga and will spend two days there so we can go to the saquisili market...(just want to see some indigenous villages and stuff...)
oh and they start drinking early here 9.00am...the bars start opening spot on 9, and are busy by 10.30am..no one can say anything about the British hence forth...in the book the advice is don't go to villages on Sunday as they prefer to get trashed early and don't want to deal with Gringos!!..i retract any bad statements i've said about germans drinking beer with their breakfast...(not that i can talk....one has been known to have a bevvy pre 10.00 during teh festival season...stones and houses and all)
we should be back within peru within a week, friday we'll be in riobambe and doing the devils noose ride....reallycool, and not too dangerous train journey where you sit ion teh tope of the train while it traverses sharp bends and swift drops...and take that train down to sibambe..then to cuenca and back over the boarder to peru!
Jo wants to go to this shaman village from huancabamba..be a couple of days there then heading down to cusco...trying to meet up with Mr Matthew Chalmers there hoepfully!
P.s: the only good things about Quito..other than its qquite pretty minus crack elimante..you can 3.5 litre beer here! its huge...jo made me share with 2 of the boys!
the boys have now gone to Colombia.. (I've been instructed by family and friend to boot...that if i enter Colombia they will not be bailing me out....sooooooo pessimistic!!!!)...so instead tomorrow, that beer will be all mine!...
p.p.s..if you really don't want to get this email..i know some of you actually get 1 or 2..let me know and I'll take you off the list!
Mwah for now..i think a glass of wine may be due...
