friday 4th aug - cameron highlands
omg today has been amazing this is what i travelled half way around the world for. ive solidered on today as ive felt the ill, and had the most energetic day. think the tandorri last nite made me ill. me and the family (our group) set off on a minibus to a tea plantation, amazing hows its grown on the steep hills of the highlands. such a view up here. we then went to a tea factory and saw how tea was made, very interesting. then went to a strawberry farm (got loads pics for dad), had a shop with loads strawberry memorabillia! then went to local markets to taste all local markets, tried yams, dried strawberrys etc. we where then dropped in the middle of nowhere, which turned out to be the highest point of the highlands, such a view before we were surronded by a cloud, quite cold too (2031 metres above sea level) ears popping and everything! we then went on a trek in the rainforest, best time ever it was soo much fun, worn in my hiking shoes. everyone falling over as really muddy, no proper track and had to use tree roots as steps, had to concentrate on every step as very steep. was wicked though i could do this everyday. after lunch we trekked to an aborigine village, where they still ive as a tribe, kids running about. then had a blowpipe demonstation with poison darts, everyone had a go but i was feeling to ill at this point! sssoooo hot today, had my head scarf on looked like proper trekker! we then started our 4.5 hour jungle trek, was in agony by this point but had the most amazing time ever, glad i carried on! theres a flower called rafflesia, which is the biggest and rarest in the world, its only open for 8 days every 3 years.....and today our luck was in! so thats what we trekked to find, in this jungle there are only 3 flowers every 500 acres. the tribe lead us on a trek through the jungle, was ssoo wicked...had to cross a rickety bamboo bridge, trek through all sorts of terrain. it was sooo surreal cant beleive we are doing such amazing things!! just cant descibe this to justice. after finding the flower, whcih was huge we trekked to a beautiful waterfall. most of the group went in to swim but i was still feeling ill after the tandorri! got some amazing photos of today and its made me look forward to the northern trek soo much. got bitten a few times today and covered in scratches and bruised...but my feet were so comfy all day. got back quite late, covered in sweat! went out for meal to malaysian restaurant where most ppl cooked their own food on the table in whats called a steam boat. had the most amazing day today, dont think its sunk in the things we are doing! i love it!! please please send me money so that i can contuinue the fun!! xxx
sat 5th aug - cameron highlands - penang (georgetown)
left early this morning on a bus and headed for the island of penang. arrived in georgetown(capital) at 3ish and settled into out rooms, nice hotel with a balcony. went out for lunch with the family then visited a buddhist temple, a hindu temple and an islamic mosque. ive learned so much about religion since ive been over here, its soo interesting to see what others believe in. the buddhsit temple was ok but i wasnt as overwhelmed as i expected to be. the hindu temple was beautiful, lots of brightly coloured ornaments, it was like a religious disneyland! had to take our shoes off in both temples and cover out knees and shoulders. then went to an islamic mosque, which is where muslims prey five times a day. us women had to wear a cloak thing that covered us head to toe, and a head scarf to cover our hair, they provided these at the door. amie and i looked hilarious, amies headscarf was luminious green so i couldnt stop laughing everytime i looked over at her! got pics! the walk back to the hotel turned into a nightmare, sarah was walking next to me and she had her bag snatched by a person on a motorbike who sped past us, he grabbed it out of her hand and bruised all her arm. she had everything in there...money, cash cards, passport, ipod, camera, phone. this is why we are glad we are on an trip, the tour leader took her to police station to report it. they are now trying to find out whether she can get a tempory passport as we cross the thai border in a couple of days. if not she has to fly back to kuala lumpar and go to the the embassy and then catch us up at ko phan gan. she was in such a state, but everyone has done there best to cheer her up tonite, just such a horrible thing to happen when everypne is being so careful. xx
