Hello everyone and greetings from sunny Oz....well it was sunny until the rain shower about half hour ago!!!
Since our last blog which was from a small town called Twizel in NZ, we went to Christchurch from where we took a flight to Melbourne. We didnt do much in Christchurch as we only had one night there and it was cold and miserable...definitely not the highlight of our time there! We just went to a mexican bar where one of our travel buddys was working and had a few drinks.
Flying into melbourne we saw the wall of smoke from all the bush fires...it was quite a sight!! When we landed, even though it was really hot and sunny, the smoke in the air made it really hazy...it was well wierd!!
First day in melbourne we did a day trip to Philip Island which is known for the famous Penguin Parade. On the way there we stopped at a few scenic spots and also got to go to a wildlife sanctuary where there were walabys, emus, kangaroos, wombats, tazmanian devil and koalas!! The highlight was definitely feeding the wallabys and kangaroos...nicky especially like the baby wallaby which kinda looks like a giant rat on the pics!! It was actually pretty cute in real life!!
We also stopped at place call Noddys where we saw some wild penguins...they were so cute as they were all huddled together underneath the boardwalks..we managed to scare the hell out of them with nicky hanging over the side taking pics of them for everyone on our bus!
We got to the site of the penguin parade just before dusk. what basically happens is that a load of little penguins (smallest in the world..only 30cm tall and 1kg) go out to sea in groups to feed for about a week...each night after the sun sets a load of them (who've been out for a while and fed themselves rotten) come back onto shore and up to their burrows...however they have to make the treacherous trip across the beach which is being watched by lots of birds of prey waiting to have a nibble! So in about groups of 10 these tiny little penguins attempt to cross the beach... they are sooo cute as you see them come out of the sea with one big guy infront and one at the back with the rest inbetween always looking around. One of the groups took about 1/2hr as they kept getting scared and having to either make a dash back to the sea or ducking down and lying on their bellys to try and camoflauge themselves... unfortunatley you van't take any pics on the beach as apparently it would scare them and they wouldn't return.. we weren't quite sure what they would make of the 300ppl watching them with the big spotlights but hey ho!!
Next day we explored Melbournes city centre... went to Chapel Street, Greville St, Corporation Rd, Yarra River, MCG stadium and various other attractions..!! Was a really cool day!
Next day we hired a car to do the GREAT OCEAN ROAD! This was amazing and one the best days of our travels so far.. it's such a scenic drive. We left about at 10am in the morning and didn't get back to the hostel until about midnight.. poor old Jay drove about 500miles as I wasn't insured as it would have cost an extra 35buckss... tight arses!! We don't mid spending that on a Nandos though! So anyway one of the big hightlights of the day had to be seeinfg wild Koalas in their naturla habitat.. one of them was within touchin distance was amazing...!! We'll try and write what all the pics are when we get them on which will explain more about the drive... oh one other thing... when we got to our last scenic stop at around 7pm we thought it would be best to get petrol for our return journey cos we only had less tahn a 1/4 tank left...the only problem was that we were surrounded by small towns/houses...where everything shuts early..we had about 120kilometres to the nearest bigger town....we came across three different petrol stations, all shut...and it was getting dark...no other cars on the road...and a house about every 10km...we started to crap ourselves! BUT luckily, whilst we were running on fumes, we found an open station...PHEW!
Next day we headed to Jay's fav spot...St Kilda.. and a beach...;) So chilled at the beach the whole day, I tried to start getting a tan and we had a Nandos...;)
Trying to be tight again we opted out of doing a day trip to all of the neighbours spots.. ie Ramsay St..Erinsborough High etc and instead jumped on the bus and did it ourselves.. only problem was Jay thought I knew where we were going when we got there and I thought he did... people looked at us rather stangely asking for Ramsay St.. who knew the street is actually called Pin Oak Ct..!!
That night was our overnight caoach trip to Sydeny which went pretty well considering it was 12hrs..!!
Arrived in Sydeny to glorious sunshine much to our relief as it had been raining and some storms for the last 10 days or so. Our hostel was out of the City Centre at Bondi beach so we spent the day again at the beach.. we didn't however do much swimming as about a week ago a surfer was attacked by a Shark in these waters...!!!! Pretty cool beach/area tho!
Next day we headed into Sydney for our sightseeing day! We had a wander through Chinatowm and the CBD (Central business district) headed over the harbour which was gorgeous! Checked out the opera house, Sydeny harbour bridge and a huge ass cruise ship that was docked there... it was massive!! We also had a rest in the gorg botanical gardens which kinda looked like central park with all the high rises at the side. First impressions of Sydeny were vv.good and a winner over Melb for me.. Jay says that's becos i'm a snob and it's cleaner and posher..and Melb is abit more grimey and street.. don't know what he means!!
Okay so today which is Sat... we checked out as we have another overnight caoch to Byron bay leaving at 10pm.. we headed into Bondi Junction to do a bit of window shopping but after a couple of hrs and only buying some skittles that got pretty boring so we headed back to the beach.. unfortunatley the rain purt a dampner on that so here we are writing this blog...!!
Okay guys I think we've bored you enough.. next couple of days we will be in Byron Bay then heading to Surfers Paradise for 3 nights, then arrive in Brisbane on Thurs night to stay with my friend Leanne,, 3 nights of free accomm... woo hoo!!
Take car everyone.. missing you all lots...lots of love xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
