We arrived in Salvador after our 12 hour bus journey, to the thumping beat of the Carnival music at 12pm, 4 days before carnival was officially due to start! If this was a sign of things to come it was going to be a busy but fun week.
The hostel we stayed in at Salvador was really cool and had some super friendly people. Having free Caipirinihas between 5-6pm every evening, helped the social atmosphere. So obviously While in Salvador we had a couple of pre carnival nights getting us ready for Rio. Salvador itself had a few pretty spectacular churches, one of which we visited and a nice port area. There are also lots of street performers and some awesome Capoeira performers, being charged to take a photo however did mean we frequently clicked and ran!
The next 5days in Rio was just incredible. Rio has its main even the Sambadromo, but it also now has several blocos which take place throughout city, morning, noon ad night!!! We were in total shock as to how much alcohol could be consumed over suh a short space of time! As we were leaving for a bloco at 11am, people were returning from a bloco that may have started at 7am!!! If we returned at 4am the streets were still full of people! Although we enjoyed the smaller blocks, when we visited the main central bloco, with an estimatated 2million people squashed into a very small location, nic kinda freaked out a little! Being small and not very strong in these situations is not ideal! Trying to walk 10 metres could take an hour! Needless to say we didn't stay at this bloco long!
Our main event for Carninval, the Sambodromo, was just incredible!!! Being the tight backpackers that we are :-) we opted for the cheapest tickets available so we were a little anxious to find out where/ with who we would be seated. From where we were sitting though we couldnt tell why there was a price difference in the sections, very impressed! The performers, costumes and atmosphere was spectacular. Even though we were sat in the aisle for 5 hours ad our drinks were warm within 5 mins it was an awesome experience!
We also managed to squeeze in a bit of sightseeing and visited the Christ the Redeemer.
So our last stop in Brazil and on to Argentina
