Well, we arrived in Hobart yesterday, Sam's already fallen in love with the place - Nicky was already smitten with it (!)
I think the last time we blogged though, we were in Melbourne still, it was probably Monday?? We went to St Kilda Festival on Sunday and spent the day wondering around the sideshows etc, but were so shattered from the previous night that we got home early and pretty much crashed!!
The next day, we checked out of Cooee on St Kilda and checked in to the Ritz. We had a real result as our booking for 2 beds in a 10-bed dorm hadn't come through, so there were no available beds... this meant we had to stay in a twin room for the same cheapcheapcheap price - tough luck...! so this allowed us to unpack and feel somewhat civilised for a while...
The hostel we were then staying in is above the bar we went to on saturday - The Elephant & Wheelbarrow, which is where they hold the 'Neighbours Night', we gave that one a miss, we just don't know who the actors are, so sorry to all you devoted Neighbours fans... we let you down!!
The monday night, Sam stayed in and sorted a few bits and bobs out, wandered around the local area and generally found out what's what
Nicky went out for a home-cooked meal with a local guy she met on saturday night - no, he's not called Shane or Todd, his name is Simon...!
Tuesday we went to the beach - for the FIRST time!!! It was so lovely, the sun shone for us and we chilled out by the sea :)
That night, we went to Cushion, a bar where they were selling all drinks for $4, after 9... the time we didn't find out til we got our first round in at 8ish... liva & learn!!
That was a great night, we ended up eating a kebab afterwards though, maybe steer clear of the old $4 drinks for a while haha!
Wednesday (our last day in Melbourne) we went to the city to do a little shopping it was great getting lost in the city for a day, just mooching about !
Simon had recommended a great vintage store hidden upstairs down a sideroad, somehow we managed to find it and bagged a couple of much needed bargains...
We also went to Acmi in Federation Square, this is a centre for the moving image. Apparently there was a film exhibition on, but the exhibition was now closed and they were preparing for an exhibition on computer games, we still had a good time wondering about, looking at the various small pictures dotted about the place.
We had a bit of dinner back at the hostel and then Nicky headed out for Spanish dohnuts and sickly, but good hot chocolate in Brunswick Street, with... yes you guessed it - Simon...!
Next day, we got up at 4AM!!! to wash, dress, pack and catch a cab to the airport to fly to Hobart, where we landed at about 9.30am.
The hostel is really nice, we had to dump our bags here though and go for a wonder, as check in is from 1pm.
Nicky showed Sam the various sights she could remember, the main mall, Salamanca Square, Battery Point (where she used to live), it was like coming home... very strange but very exciting to be back!!
We went out the the docks and did one of Nicky's (and now Sam's) favourite things - fish and chips from floating chip shops, carried down to the furthest dock and then eaten looking across the water with the sun and beautiful, cloudless sky helping us realise we're finally here!!!
Following our early dinner, Sam got some amazing homemade ice cream and we sat in Parliament square. Then we went to The Observatory (a bar that was Siscos Fish Restaurant when Nicky was here last) in search of Joe - Nicky's friend from the last time she was here, he now manages this bar, but yesterday was his day off!! So naturally, we stopped for a few drinks and chilled out by the water, chatting to the awesome barman Adrian. Luck of luck though, Joseph walked, which was so great, as Nic hasn't seen him for 2 years!! We're heading out to the Observatory again tonight and will hopefully be hooking up with some more of Nic's old mates and some guys from the hostel, who all seem pretty cool.
We're gonna try and upload some pics now, fingers crossed we're up to date on what we've been up to so far...!
Lots of love to you all and thank you so much for all your emails and messages, keep em coming please, we're trying to reply, but time gets away from you so quickly here!!
Take care,
Us
