Hello from the beach!!
Since leaving Phnom Penh, we travelled down to Sihanoukville in the South West coast of the country. We spent one night there and then got a boat out to Koh Russei, mostly called Bamboo Island. It is very quiet and peaceful apart from daytrippers who arrive by the boatload in the middle of the day. Not many people stay overnight on the island as the accommodation is very basic, with electricity for 5 hours a day and no hot water. Our room was considered luxury beacuse it had a private bathroom. The cockroaches, rats and mice were all thrown in for free. But the accommodation was totally made worthwhile by the amazing paradise beaches and cyrstal clear turquoise water. The whole beach didn't have more than about ten people on at any given time. It was so lovely and we had no option but to chill out and relax, and we certainly did that!
We came back to civilisation after three nights on Bamboo Island for a couple of nights of hot showers and constant power. Sihanoukville is quite touristy but still a really nice place with a beautiful beach. We have sunbathed during the day and dined on $3 bbq on the beach at night. And we have certainly taken advantage of the many happy hour bars. The Cambodians haven't fully grasped the idea of happy hour, as many last all day. Obviously we haven't complained about this...!
We left Sihanoukville yesterday and travelled further round the coast towards Vietnam, to Kep. We came here to visit a particular island that we'd heard about, but the Gods were against us and everything went wrong. But we did have a very romantic Valentine's night, eating the freshest of fresh crab and prawns at a little place right on the beach front. We watched the fisherman empty the crab baskets in the water in front of us whilst the sun set. Very lovely! We cross over into Vietnam tomorrow for more adventures.
We have really enjoyed our time in Cambodia and would highly recommend it to anyone. We will be leaving happy, relaxed and very tanned.
Here are our latest pictures, we can't promise that they won't make you very jealous...
