So today I feel like we conquered Rome! Our plan was to see mainly just the colosseum however I feel like we saw so much more. We boarded our early morning plane from Heathrow to Rome with Alitalia and literally just passed out. The plane was so comfy! Not like the normal Ryanair flights we book. We definitely needed the rest with such a busy day ahead. Knowing Josh as well as I do it was not going to be a stroll around, he literally will have me running around Rome and trying to take in as much of the city as possible.
We took the coach into Rome which was only 8 euro return, and took around 50 minutes. Then a quick tube ride and we were outside the colosseum. I can't explain the feeling of walking out of the tube station to such an amazing sight. The colosseum is literally right in front of you. It's amazing! Possibly one of the most fascinating buildings I have ever seen. I think it's because of all the history and maybe a little bit because I imagined Russell Crow running around fighting in Gladiator..
We were quickly approached by a tour guide who offered us a guided tour around, 26 euros and we missed the hour queue! Josh and I quickly ran to the cash point and met back up with the well spoken English Italian girl. However on meeting up with the guy who took the cash we discovered it was actually double the price. Embarrassed that we'd misunderstood we swiftly walked away ready to brave the hour queue. The hour queue turned out to be about half an hour and only cost us 12 euros each! Happy that we'd by fate saved over half of the money and could now instead do our own thing we walked around the colosseum. It was literally incredible! How it was built to such a high standard and still standing today all those years ago left me in awe. I don't know why but I also felt slightly sad. Thinking about the men that were forced out in front of a crowd to face their death in such horrific circumstances. I read that they used to act out plays to the crowd where the end to the story was an actor being torn to death. Just horrific! It's crazy to see a cross standing quite central and that the pope visits every Good Friday when such horrific things was happened there.
After an hour or so inside we made our way to the exit and decided to head to the Vatican. Josh nearly got stopped because his t shirt sleeves were rolled up as apparently this was classed as inappropriate clothing! Inside it was beautiful, such attention to detail. I was definitely impressed. We ate our lunch (pizza) in the sunshine sitting on the steps looking on to the fountain outside the Vatican. Bliss! Finally dawned on me that this was my life for the next 4 months. No work no stress just seeing wonderful places! Our last stop the Spanish steps. Not that you could see much as literally every step someone was sat enjoying lunch or just enjoying the sun. Pretty cool to see though and we joined the hundred or so people just because we can!
Now I'm sat on the plane, phone on charge ear phones in and movie ready. So impressed with Alitalia! Really comfortable seats and everything you need including a plug to charge my I phone.
Time to see Rio-de-Janeiro! Can't wait :)
