Our ferry trip across to the south island was largely uneventful as a lot of ferries are. However, unlike your typical trip from Dover to Calais, you weren't sat on board staring out at a channel of water. Instead you were looking out on the epic landscape of the south islands bays. It brought with it the great sense of anticipation and awe as we'd heard on numerous occasions that the scenery the south offered so much.
Our first day on the island was one which every traveller needs once in a while - a big chill out! We were fortunate enough to be offered a roof over our heads for a couple of nights by the lovely Christabelle (who we'd met in Rarotonga). Rather than staying with her, we were actually staying with her parents who welcomed backpackers with open arms. So open in fact that they'd even cooked us a roast chicken! The day out in Blenheim was great though. A lovely warm, sunny day (all of 10 degrees) which we spent running a few errands, doing a little shop and preparing ourselves for the trip ahead! On our second evening at the Grant residence we were shown the kiwi hospitality once more with a fantastic way of cooking together using hot plates and a grill to make ourselves our own dinner at the table.
