We got up bright and early, made a picnic and got the bus to Bondi Junction where we bought our Explorer Link tickets (which include the return train to Katoomba as well as a hop on, hop off bus at the mountains) for 51A$ each. The train to Katoomba goes from central station so we had to get the underground there from Bondi.
We missed a train to Katoomba by 3 mins which was annoying as the next one wasn't for an hour, however the next train was an express service so we ended up getting there only a few minutes later than if we'd got on that early train, so no time lost which was a bonus! In all it took about 2 and a half hours to get to Katoomba on the train.
Once we arrived we had to wait half an hour for the next bus. The main thing we wanted to see today was the 3 Sisters so decided to head there first. Instead of "hopping" off at Echo Point, which is the best viewing area for the sisters we went to the next stop, Honeymoon Lookout and did a bush walk back towards them. It was such a beautiful walk, there was so much to look at and along the way there were numerous look out points over the mountains, we got some magnificent views.
After quite a challenging walk we got to the Giant Staircase - we climbed down the rock and got to a lower lookout and we were right there at the 3 Sisters. We then saw the Giant Staircase next to us that you can walk down to then go over a bridge out to the third sister. These stairs were practically vertical they were so steep and each one was only about an inch wide!! There were signs everywhere saying only strong walkers and climbers!! Gulp! Nick said he would go down and I could wait here but I decided to challenge myself as I don't want to regret not doing anything on this trip - so off we went, very slowly!! The girl behind Nick fell, pretty scary but she was Ok.
We made it all the way down and we went over the bridge to the sister. The bridge was steady but it was still really scary as the drop below was huge! We took some photos of the beautiful surroundings and sat out at the third sister for a while. And then it hit me, I hadn't even thought about the fact I'd have to climb back up! I begun making my way back up whilst Nick took some more photos, I made it but almost died when I got to the top lol. So glad I did it though, it was so beautiful.
We continued the walk round to Echo Point where we got fantastic views back on the 3 sisters - we could just about see the bridge that we had walked over too, was scary seeing how high up it was! After relaxing and taking in the scenery we got the bus to Gordon Falls, from here we could see the back of the 3 Sisters too. After climbing back up from gordon Falls we stopped and enjoyed our picnic before getting the bus to Leura where we caught our train back to Sydney, followed by the underground to Bondi Junction and the bus home. It has been a long day but an amazing one too
