Choppers Travels
Hello one and all.
Get here to vang vienne a week ago today and it's flown by. This is a great place. We're staying in a place called the riverside bungalows (by the river funnily enough). It was reccomended to us by a canadian fellow we met along the way and he hasn't steared us wrong. We've even got two resident geckos that live in the bathroom (they're pretty big and very noisy), mind you at least they eat the bugs. Had a really scary incident with a big spider in luang prabang, it was in my rucksack and i had to get the hotel owner to get it off. He didn;t speak english so i grabbed him by the hand and led him to my room (think he thought he'd got lucky), he saw the spider (kind of cacked himself a bit as it was a bigun) then he swatted it off (it was big and fast, big ones are supposed to be slow, i feel cheated) and then stood on it (in bare feet, minging), it took him 3 stamps to kill the thing (it carreid on running with 3 legs missing), horrible. Anyway we have geckos now and they seem to be eating all things bug like, which is nice.
anyway back to vang vienne, the was to describe this place is (actually, hang on i'll go take a picture and put it on the site) bit like dodge city but with more dust (and laoatian people). It's apparently a good place for action sports (kayackin, rock climbing, quad biking, etc), we elected to do the tubing (twice) pretty good fun. the river is really slow so you just meander down the river with a beer in your hand, stopping off at the odd bar (made of bamboo), they have rope swings and kamakazee slides (like those zip line things, good fun). A pretty fun day out actually.
Vang vienne just soaks up time, it's mad. all the bars play non stop friends or the simpsons, it's kind of like spain used to be before they clamped down on copyright (and health and safety), the place is really cool. Got to say if you ever pass by these parts go to vang vienne (it's the only thing to do in Laos, but it's enough).
the night life is pretty cool too, bars are supposed to stay open till 11.30, however they stay open till about 2 or 3 if your still drinking (and the police don't bust them).
I forgot, yesterday we spent the day round a pool in a nice hotel (well actully the nice hotel. $40 a night, we were gong to stay there but nic got a bit worried about money, so we didn't, ho hum), the pool was great, it didn't take your skin off or anything, which is the best you can hope for here. The view was great, pretty chilled.
the only blot on the landscape was that this canadian we met (another one, a bloke we say in thailand at the full moon) got beeten up by 7 lads in a bar last night, we were there but didn't see anything. He's full of stitches but seems ok (don't worry mum i didn't get involved, i just sat him down and stopped him and his mate trying to go after them, one beating mustn't have been enough), so that was strange, but it didn't stop us enjoying the night as such i now am quite hungover.
i think that's it we were supposed to go to vientienne tomorrow but we've not booked our ticket, plus everyone says there's nowt to do there. so we may stay here an extra day.
not stroked any tigers recently.
have a gooden
matt
