If we were being paid for blogging I think we would have been sacked by now.......
Still finding it amazingly fiddly to upload photos so another STA stock pic for this blog for now, jees!
Anyway, after a very relaxing time in Paraty we took a six hour journey to Sao Paulo for one night. The next morning we hopped over to a place called Campo Grande, a rather grotty capital of the southern state that hosts a large part of the Pantanal, one of the worlds largest wetlands.
It is "dry" season now so the best time to visit the Pantanal, meaning that the water has receeded to an extent and you get an even better opportunity to see the variet of wildlife living in the Pantanal.
We met Sam and Tom at Campo Grande and travelled about five hours into the Pantanal, where we stayed in a very basic lodge, which didnt matter too much as we originally intended to camp and having got there realised that was a bad idea (far too hot) so the tired matresses didnt phase us too much.
We stayed for four days and went on river and night safaris, jungle walks and priana fishing. This is where the pictures will come in really handy as we saw so much, to list some;
Caimens
Howler monkeys
Bush pigs
The worlds largest rodents - Capyabara, didnt look much like a rodent to me!
Brazilian fox - makes it sound better
Cows! (plus a stinky dead one)
Armadillos
Racoons
AND many many birds, including Toucans, giant Kingfisher, Stalk like things and Vultures. Toucans are the best but hard to take photos of, some of the colours of the birds were lovely.
What people want to see most is a Jaguar, we unfortunately didnt see one, our guide Jonny Indiana said his last trip saw four, but none for us. However I did capture some footprints as proof.
The Pantanal was amazing, Sam said you would never see the density of wildlife, especially birds at home, it felt like a privaledge to visit. We also watched the sun rise and set, there are few people there and it is peaceful.
Only one thing broke the peace and that was four people in one room with sickness and downlow badtimes for 24 hours, jesus!!! Sam first, then Tom and me and Lee helped us all to bed (well not Tom) but 4AM his kicked in. Lets just say joint experiences make friendships stronger! Mr Indianna helped us out with some mega tablets called Vomistop (!) and had us drinking coconut milk straight from the tree, worked a treat. The thought of rice and beans and the fried pirana we caught it still a sensetive one for now though.....
