Milford Sound was beautiful, in an 'oh look, more beautiful rugged scenery' kind of way. Unfortunately it was overcast by the time we got there and visibility was poor so we could only just about make out the waterfalls lining the walls of the ford. I imagine it is breathtaking on a clear day but as it was we weren't blown away.
Jak went bungee jumping the next morning - the Nevis bungee with a 134m or 8.5 second freefall, the highest one in the country. You have to catch a cable car out to the middle of an abyss before jumping into the aforementioned abyss. Rather him than me! He was stoked afterwards though.
That afternoon we went 'luging', which is ridiculously fun and very addictive. It basically involves racing gravity-powered carts down the side of a hill before catching a skylift back up so that you can race again. It felt like we were in Mario Carts, especially when we got a bit of air at the top of the drops or skidded on the corners! It's one of the cheapest things to do in Queenstown and definitely worth doing. After luging we dropped into a bird sanctuary to watch kiwis being fed. We felt like we had to see the national bird whilst we were here and our chances of seeing the shy nocturnal animal in the wild were slim to nil. It's a cool little bird but odd looking - it can't fly and it has a nose on the end of its long beak.
In the evening we went out and got ridiculously drunk. We soaked up the alcohol with a Ferg Burger on the way home (the stories are true, Ferg Burgers are bloody amazing) but the next day still ended up being a write-off. All we did was go on the internet for a bit and go for a walk around town.
Yesterday I was meant to be doing a paraglide from the top of Coronet Peak, 5,400 feet high, but it was too windy for it to go ahead :-( We got up early and everything! I'm really hoping I get the chance to do it later in our travels. We cheered ourselves up by getting our hair cut - by people who could barely speak English ('how much want off?' was the extent of the consultation) but who were a good deal cheaper than everyone else. Thankfully neither of us ended up with a mullet. We headed into town that night for pizza, ice cream and far too much alcohol. We could definitely stay longer in Queenstown!
We have tickets for tomorrow's England vs Georgia rugby world cup match so we're moving on to Dunedin this morning, where the game is being played. Jak is like a kid on Christmas Eve and keeps checking he still has his England flag and that the facepaints haven't run away...
