Right, here goes...
Arrived in Argentinean town of Gualeguaychu (one horse only) after 18 hour FREEzING cold bus journey, in order to cross the border to Fray Bentos (yes, as in Pies!) in Uruguay. Only to find out that the border is closed, from what i gathered speaking to roadsweepers, shopkeepers etc, due to the Uruguayans building a paper factory on their side of the river and polluting it. Anyway, all you need to know is that its a LONG WAy to the next place where you can cross, its boiling hot, we stink and theres nowhere to stay.
So, i befriended this old hag with 3 teeth, whos son happens to be a taxi driver, she calls to get him down to help us. He says he´ll take us to the border and try to talk to the police, it should be ok to cross as we´re tourists, but no guarantees. Of course i´m up for that, so in we get...
a few miles down the road his story changes, and now he tells us that only journalists will be allowed through, so we have to say we´re with GREENPEAcE there to report on the paper factory!!!! Bear in mind nobody speaks English here!!!
Get to the border, he does his talking, then the guy comes over to the car "Journalistas?" he says, "Si" i say! "Identificacion?" he says, !s***! i think! "no" i say.....................what´s he gonna do?
......RESULt!!! Waved through and over the river to Uruguay!!! For the sum of 50 pesos!!
Arrived in Fray Bentos StARvING to death, couldn´t find a Pie anywhere!
