We did our Fraser Island tour from Rainbow beach. This trip is done by nearly everyone that does the east coast, you hear so many good things about it, you just can't not do it. So we got on our Self drive 4x4 trip. We did the trip through our hostel Pippies. We had 7 people in our 4x4 and there were 8 in the other. Four of us could drive in our 4x4. We did a group trip to IGA (supermarket) and got a few boxes of Goon to last us out on the island. Then we were on our way. Chris couldn't wait to drive the 4X4, I was only going to drive if I absolutely had to, as driving on sand isn't the easiest of things, especially when there are big washouts etc. On the ferry over to the island we saw loads of dolphins jumping out of the water right near the ferry. Our first stop on the island was Eli creek, you can float in the water and the current will bring you around. It was a bit breezy that day though, just a little bit too cold to jump right in. We drove up to Indian head, and saw our first dingo. Fraser is famous for its pure breed dingoes, they are a wild animal and have attacked people before. They just look like a skinny little dog, but I wouldn't want to mess with it. On Indian head we saw some rays in the clear water below, and in the distance there was a whale. But I kept missing it jump out, I only managed to see the water splash it made after it had jumped back in! The camps on Fraser are fenced all the way around to prevent dingoes getting in, unless you camp on the beach. We heard of people who camped on the beach and they had dingoes scratching at their tents all night because they had left food in there. We all got the Goon out in the evening and the drinking games began, which was good fun as we had a few funny characters in our group. On the second day we went to Lake Wabby, it was a long walk there, luckily we didn't find any of the snakes and spiders we had been warned about. The lake was freezing and there was a steep sand bank which led down to the lake. All the lads ran down it into the lake, Chris tripped and did a roly poly at the last minute right into the lake, which was so funny, it's a shame I didn't get it on film. I got right into the lake. not quite sure how I stayed in there as it was so cold. The last day was a beautiful sunny day. We went to Lake Makensie which is the highlight of Fraser. I'll describe it hear but I don't think you'll believe me unless you actually see it. It has the purest whitest sand all around and the water is crystal clear. It is so clear in the shallow water it looks like a swimming pool. The water is supposed to condition your hair. The water is so pure you can drink it as you go for a swim. The water gets more and more blue as you swim further out. It was just amazing. It's a shame we couldn't stay there all day. We quickly drove to lake Birribeen, which looks just like Lake Makensie but it has mud on the bottom of the lake under the sand that you can rub all over your body. The mud is hidden under the sand in the water so we didn't see it at first. Chris dived into the reeds by the lake and rubbed the mud all over him until he was all black. It wasn't until we went into the lake to wash it off we realised the mud we were supposed to actually put on was under the sand. So hopefully there wasn't anything too yuk in the reed mud we first put on! On the way back to the ferry we got stuck in the sand but only for a few minutes, we gave it a push and it came out fine. We could literally see the ferry from where we were. So we would have been gutted if we had got properly stuck. You will have to look at the photos to see how beautiful it was. I want to go back already.
