It rained really heavily during the night and was still raining when we got up. This morning we are booked to go on a jet boat so equipped with wet weather gear and shorts ( very stylish) we headed to Queenstown harbour via the minibus and wandered around the town before our 11.00 sailing. It was still raining when we checked in and we were issued with black waterproof macs with hoods and life jackets before getting on the boat. After a safety briefing we set off at high speed, first across the lake which was quite choppy and the rain was driving into our face but it was very exhilarating. As we entered the narrower River Karwaru we were much more sheltered and we did our first 360 spin - awesome! The jet boat was so powerful - 820hp! We continued up the river, hugging the riverbanks all very exciting and wherever it became narrower we inevitably completed another 360 spin. After 30 minutes we turned around retracing our steps down the river hugging the other riverbank with frequent 360 spins. Back out onto the lake the rain and wind had lessened as we headed back to the harbour and completed a last 360 in front of the audience before docking. We were relieved of our waterproofs and were surprised to find that we were still dry other than soggy bottoms - those with trousers looked much wetter.
We had coffee on the harbour side and again met up with Susie and Joe, a young couple who we had first met in Christchurch and were on a 6 month sabbatical from work and had travelled in Asia, Australia and finally New Zealand. We then had a really nice lunch at the Botswana Butchery and by then the rain had stopped and sun coming out and had a walk around the lake before heading back into town to meet with the minibus.
On a much more important note Christmas has arrived here in New Zealand, the first Christmas songs are being played on the radio and in the shops. Trees are decorated in the shops and the city streets have decorations up but not lit yet, but the warm temperatures, the wearing of shorts and snow on tops of the mountains can leave you very confused!!!!!!
