Bethany in Australia 2006
I just got in to Australia yesterday. All the traveling went pretty smooth, although it was decided that the LAX airport isn't a fun place to be. The group I'm taveling with (8 students from UW-Eau Claire) had a 14 hour layover in LA. We went to Hollywood, but it really wasn't as excited as expexted- we all fell asleep in a park and waited for the time to pass. We didn't even see anyone famous. The fun began when we got into Fiji. It was AMAZING. We spent 3 days on the Robinson Crusoe Island where we stayed in these little buru's made of tree branches and what-not. I went snorkeling and saw 2 shark. The islanders told us Fiji shark are friendly. During a sunset I took a kayak out and saw dozens of flying fish skipping all over the water surface. One night I went out hand line fishing on a boat and was the only person besides one Fijian who caught a fish. YAY! It was just a small reef fish, but it had stripes and was pretty. The islanders performed traditional warrior dancing, machette throwing, fire-breathing, and fire stick dancing. The men are all extreemly huge and ALL muscle. My favorite part of the whole trip was playing volleyball with them every afternoon for hours. It's great because they speak their native language and just they're joking around and yelling and laughing. I never saw them angry, just really really happy and laid back. The first night we arrived at the island, we participated in the kava cermemony in order to be an islander also. Kava tastes like muddly water or licking a tree and we had to gulp down a coconut shell full of it. The day that we left the island, it poured and poured all afternoon, but we had already made it to a hostel on the main island, where we met some Irish brothers and played games and went swimming (in the rain). Yesterday 3 of us had to leave Fiji a day early and fly to Brisbane where we are staying at a hostel with free internet access. Other than that, it is kinda boring, but I suppose compared to Fiji most things are boring. We had to wing it though, because when we arrive at the airport we didn't have any plans yet so we had to get on some train and find a hostel, but it worked out. We walked around the city in the evening trying to find food. I'm excited about going on to Lismore this afternoon. I'll upload some pictures sometime this week.
