Well, here I am in Pretoria which is about 45 minutes North of Johannesburg.
The Flight
Well, because they'd cancelled the later flight to Johannesburg and ours was delayed for so long they combined the two flights so the plane was packed and it meant that a lot of people who'd booked anything higher than economy class were downgraded, let's just say there were a lot of angry businessmen at the boarding gate..
On boarding the plane you had to walk through club class before you got to the rubbish seats which made economy look even more cramped as club had their own little pods! Typical I was in the middle of 3 seats but luckily the 2 girls either side were really nice. Plus when I went to put my bag in the overhead locker there was no space so I had to put it 5 rows back on the other side which still wasn't easy because I couldn't reach!! Being a little girl a man got up and helped me put it up! :D
So far, everyone I had encountered was very nice considering we'd all been messed around with the flight. However, then came the stewards (strangely all men in our cabin).... Not once did they crack a smile!! But in fairness the captain did then explain that the plane had got delayed somewhere else so was late coming in therefore, the crew had worked back to back without a break. This also meant they had a 3 hr break mid-flight so the company wasn't breaking the law. Food was alright, watched a crappy rom-com and tried to sleep, not very successfully but I found the head on the table method the best!
In the morning about an hour and a half before landing the plane came back to life.. Was bursting for a wee by now because I hadn't wanted to wake the girl next to me but I definitely choose the worst time to go as it seemed everyone needed a morning wee and a brush of the teeth!
When I came back the poor girl next to me was having a panic because she was going to miss her connection flight to Mozambique, so I spent the next hour or so calming her down and chatting to her to keep her mind off it! (look at me being all grown up!!)
Passport control- enough said! Felt like a criminal...
The Airport
As I came out of passport control I spotted my bag coming around the conveyor (it's pretty hard to miss being bright pink!) so, imagine me running across to the carousel getting there just in time then pulling so hard I almost knock someone's case off... Oops! Then obviously it took me about 5 minutes to get it on my back and configure with my other bags!
The Hostel
Found my little bloke (Michael) straight away who was taking me, another lady and a boy (who never turned up) to Pretoria backpackers! Michael was lovely and gave us ice cold water when we got to the car which was appreciated as although it's very overcast it's sticky and hot. Didn't see much en route really apart from the main south African University which was huuuuuuge!!
Pretoria itself seems quite wealthy with massive villa type houses as you hit the outskirts but it does get more poor the closer to the centre you go. The hostel I'm staying in is nice enough (see pics) and as I was the first person to arrive in my cottage I had the first pick of beds.. There were 2 in the living room downstairs, a double bed upstairs with 2 single beds hidden behind some cupboards. I wasn't allowed the double bed so went for one of the hidden ones as I didn't fancy sleeping in the living room just in case people are in there..
Not gonna lie, spent most of my time today on Skype and I have an orientation meeting this evening and a meal at 7 after which, I will most probably flop into bed as I'm knackered.
Pick-up from the hostel at 9am in the morning and a 4 hour bus journey then at 10.30 to Tzaneen where I'm spending the next 4 weeks.
I apologise for the length but I'm bored so got carried away!
