18th Dec 2007…
Auckland Airport - my original flight to Fiji on my itinerary didn't exist any more so I had to wait in the airport for 12 hours to catch the 2.00pm flight to Nadi, Fiji.
Sat next to Gumbet or something like that, Irsh girl travelling on her own. Nice enough girl - she decided to join me at the hostel I was staying at - Smugglers Cove, right on the beach - shame it was pissing down when we arrived.
Embraced the Fijian culture by drinking Kava - basically muddy water - root plant mixed with water - meant to make you hallucinate if you drink a lot of it. Live band were playing all night - The Kavaholics 0 really good.
Few drinks then bed as I was pretty jet lagged!
19th - 20th Dec 2007…
Stayed at Smugglers Cove - weather brighten up a bit but still rained a couple of times throughout the couple of days. Basically did a whole lot of chilling out and tried to world out what I was going to do for the next couple of weeks while I was here. So the plan…
Robinson Crusoe Island - 3nts
Beachcomber Island including xmas - 3 nts
Kuata - 2 nts
Coral View - 2 nts
Manta Ray Island - 2 nts including new years eve.
Then back to Nadi for the last couple of days before flying to NZ.
Met a couple of people to chill out with including a London lad and a Swedish gut as well as a random little couple where the guy worked as a crematorium incinerator maintenance worker - he had some random stories to tell including mentioning the Cambridge one which was nice.
21st - 23rd Dec 2007…
Arrived on the island via boat to the locals signing to us from the beach and playing guitars which was pretty cool. It was like being on shipwrecked or something. Nice little huts, really basic showers - i.e bucket, fires on the beach, making jewellery from coconuts - it was all good fun.
Met the following people,
Nick/ Linda - on a honeymoon with a twist.
Miles - recognised him from the plane
Andrew and girlfriend - Scottish
George/Pip - Brighton- nice couple - got on with these the best!
2 Danish girls - arrived on the last night so only got to know then briefly but seemed nice!
So as the for Island itself, it was definitely better than the mainland. Weather was much better too! Played lots of volleyball which was great fun, definitely back to basics through which was actually quite cool as it added to the whole experience - couldn't have done this for too long though! Beach was ok, but it wasn't the best - well it was stupidly nice compared to the beaches back home, just wasn't the white sand clear waters - that was still to come.
Met David, Scottish, on the last day on the island. He was supposed to be there for a couple of days but decided to join me at beachcomber as he said It was a lot better. So back to Nadi and then onto the port where we would head to beachcomber. Met Rochelle, Kirstie and Kristin and the bus to the bus - English from Devon/Somerset.
Got to beachcomber and checked into the 123 bed dorm!!!!
24th - 26th Dec 2007...
I had arrived at Paradise!!! The party Island, sunny hot day, white sand, and crystal blue water and I was going to be here for Christmas - gole! Was lucky to get a space as this island had been booked up for NYE 4 months ago!
Chilled out with the girls and David for much of the day, then met up with Jimmy and Corey from OZ - they were such a good laugh. It was xmas eve so was up for a big one! Found myself in the best group as we were all up for it!! The rest of the island though didn't seem to have the party atmosphere I was expecting from its reputation. Our group though made it happen - it was time to Fire up!!
The next three days consisted of a mixture of drinking, eating curry, drinking, kayaking, drinking, parasailing, dancing, limbo, drinking and not a great deal of sleeping - it was awesome!
Our group really bonded - we were known as the Nigel Family. There was the hardcore and then the friend of the family. We had virtually made up a new language, a dance and handshake - man we most have been pissed the whole time.
