March 26th (Thursday) - Day 26 - Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Another day and another early start. We got on the Mekong express; a public bus to Phnom Pehn. It was uneventful until the border. We went through all the formalities and went for lunch. I got chicken curry to find that they dont waste anything in Cambodia. It had some meat but it also had the congealed blood, feet, beaks, bones the works. The rice was nice :) We arrived at the bus station and were surrounded by people trying to sell us anything and everything. This was to become the norm as the country is so poor. We headed for a large dome market to look round. Afterwards we had a meal with the group at the restaurant that helps street kids. Jess knows some of the kids who are too young to work who instead sell things on the streets. We played with them and made them paper toys.
March 27th (Friday) - Day 27 - Phnom Penh
We met the group and drove to S21. This is an old school that was turned into a prison under the Khmer Rouge. The guide went into massive detail about what went on there. Basically anyone educated was seen as a risk to the Khmer Rouge so they were locked up, tortured, raped and then killed upon mass. It was estimated 80,000 people went through S21 alone. [I am not going to go into any more detail out of respect - Its was hard to see and hard to think about - It's one of the things you have to see before you can believe]. Afterwards we drove out of town to the killing fields. This is where everyone was killed and put into 1 of 43 mass graves. [Again I am not going into anymore details here]. For lunch we went to Friends. This is another street kid restaurant. The food was amazing! After lunch we went to the culture museum and then the Russian market. Very same same. We headed to Boeny Kak lake to watch the sun go down.
