Our first full day has been great but exhausting! After going to bed early last night to catch up on missed sleep, we got up just in time to miss the free breakfast at the hostel (we now know to ask about end times!). We got ready and discovered that one of the girls staying in our room is from San Francisco and knows a guy from Santa Clara that we knew. Small world! We took off and walked about 8 blocks to wait for a bus. After standing for awhile, a very nice Irish woman informed us that no buses would be coming down that street, due to a large funeral for a former Irish president that day. When we finally found the bus we were looking for and ran full speed after it, we sat on the top floor of the double-decker bus out of the city to the village of Malahide, about a 25 minute ride. There, we took a tour of the Malahide castle and walked around the green, forested grounds around it. We also visited the village of Malahide, where we ate lunch at a pub and walked around the marina a little. We've been lucky that it hasn't rained and has been sunny all day, but it is chilly here.
Next, we headed back to the city where we took another 5 hour sightseeing walk around the city. We walked over Butt Bridge (Sara, we touched the butt!), saw the Oscar Wilde memorial (for you Greg!), walked around a beautiful park with more people sitting on the lawn and on benches than we've ever seen, and walked down the shopping district on Grafton Street. On the way back to our hostel, we walked through the Temple Bar district and saw adorable restaurants and pubs. We plan on returning there tonight after a little rest to listen to live Irish music at the Temple Bar. So for now, we are sitting in the hostel resting and watching Scrubs which is on the TV, getting the energy to set out again.
So, thus far we are on budget (more or less) and enjoying every minute. The picture that is up is not ours, because we cannot upload pictures at this hostel. But we will as soon as we can. More to come!
