So Elissa and I had booked a 22 hour ferry from Rome to Barcelona. It was significantly cheaper to do so, and saved us a nights accommodation as well. We were a bit confused about what was a "passage ticket" in comparison to a "Pullman seat", with about a 25 dollar difference. After a bit of research, we found that the passage ticket basically just granted you entrance onto the ferry, and then it was a fend for yourself situation. We decided to chance it and booked it. Our expectations were completely different from one another. I was picturing lying on the top deck with all our clothes on at night, surrounded by likeminded stingy travelers. The only ferries I've really been on have been ones around Asia and they're usually quite crammed on. Elissa was a bit more positive, but she had been on ferries before. She was right in the end. Basically, we were allowed anywhere on levels 10 and 11 where the activities were, the other floors were just cabins and seats. This was like a cruise ship, there were a few bars and restaurants, a games room, a casino and even a club. We boarded the boat and wandered around, the deck had a pool and a bar (where se got some free sangria from a nice bartender!) and we bought a strawberry slushie and spiked it with our vodka collection we have been building up from hostel friends leaving them behind. We fell asleep in one of the restaurants on a couch but they kicked us out at 2am because They were closing. There was a 24 hour restaurant down the hallway where we coild sleep, but all these veterans of cheap ferry riding had beat us and got all the good couches. We went for a wander but only really discovered a club full of a few old men having a drink. We settled for some uncomfortable seats in the restaurant and had some hot chocolate to warm up (the air conditioning is ridiculous!) but I couldn't really sleep so just spent time planning the trip and reading my lonely planet. Luckily there was a stopover in port torres so a lot of people got off around 5.30am, so scored ourselves one of the couches. We then got an opportunity to sleep there until 9am when they woke us up. We ended up hanging around and getting more sleep until 10.20, when we decided to go sort ourselves out and head up to the deck to sun tan. We scored some deck chairs, a luxury we have missed out on in Italy as they are a rip off to hire on the beach. We then spent the day lying in the sun on the Mediterranean by a pool and with music playing. It was all so satisfying, especially after the amount of s*** we had copped from people, asking why we didn't just suck it up and get a flight, and people telling us how bad it was going to be. The whole thing was a fun experience, I was happy we didn't invest in the Pullman seats. They actually looked uncomfortable, this way we actually got to lie down on a couch to sleep! Would totally do this again
