Nat and Beck Go Large!
We arrived in Puno, which is 4000 metres above sea-level, after the most horrendous 40 hour journey ever! Has taken us two days to pass through Chile to get to Peru, and we have journeyed through the Andes, had our 1st taste of altitude sickness at customs at the Argentinian/Chilean border (Nat had to go on the oxygen tank for a bit), got taken across the Peruvian border in the best yellow banger, then took more buses with the locals to get to Puno, and the bus hit a dog on the way (won't be sitting in the front seat again). Finally arrived in Puno at 9pm on Monday night, to find the hostel had no gas, therefore no hot showers - not what you want to hear after travelling for 40 hours non-stop. The situation had still not been rectified by the next morning, so we moved hostels, had showers and looked round the town.
Wednesday was Nat's birthday; we took a daytrip to Lake Titicaca and visited the Floating Islands, which are made entirely of reeds which are replaced every week, and Taquile Island, which involved a hike up the hill to the main square. We also gorged on choc and orange cake (supplied by Becky) and went out for dinner (Italian, was only one open!) and went to bed at a shocking 10pm! Must be getting old!
We flew up to Lima today...luckily our flight was delayed, as the troll of a driver who was taken us to the airport was more concerned about getting his minibus filled before he left Puno than about us making our check-in time. Back down to sea-level for a couple of days before we go to Cuzco!
