Nat and Beck Go Large!
We arrived in Wellington early evening on Tuesday and battled our way through rush hour traffic to our hostel. The very helpful girl in reception waved her arms a bit and said "you can park somewhere around here"...took us an hour to find 'somewhere'.
We finished off our chicken butties from the trip down and went downstairs for A drink...literally. The bar actually had a real barman i.e. he was large and round and not Swedish. Being generally sad, we had our 1 drink and went off to bed.
The bloke in our room kindly interrupted our well-deserved slumber to try and knock over our bunk with his industrial-sized backpack at some ungodly hour...then did the same at 7am when he was going to check out. To be fair, our room was about 2 foot square, but a little precision please! The other people in our room were nice enough...there was an invisible girl, we knew she was there cos her stuff was there, but she very rarely appeared during our waking hours...an English bloke called Chris, who slept on the bunk opposite (ie a foot away from) Becky...and Martin, crazy Nordic bloke who slept all day, stayed out all night and took a fancy to Nat. Don't think so mate.
On Wednesday, we went for our traditional mince round the city, went up the hill in the cable car for a lovely view of Wellington and then went shopping for more CD's. We also saw a car crashed into the window of the NZ version of John Lewis, which was very exciting, then ventured into said shop to purchase a much-needed pressed powder from Clinique for Becky. However, the made-up queen from behind the counter with the crazy eyelashes sold Becky the wrong bloody colour - beeatch. I can hear the "just take it back and exchange it" cries from you lot back home...but do you really think Becky kept the receipt??!
We ventured 2 blocks to Domino's for tea that night, and settled down to watch tv for the evening - top viewing American Idol, Friends and some tennis film with Dunst girl in.
The next day, we went on a tour to see some seal colonies near Wellington. Our tour guide was called Todd - he's an actor who has appeared in many tv shows and films, including Lord Of The Rings - he played Minion Man in Return of the King, you can see him on the elephant that Legolas slides down! Check it out: www.toddrippon.com He takes himself very seriously, so be sure not to laugh! He was very informative actually, gave us lots of info on the history, geography and culture of Wellington, Lord of the Rings, design for his costume, his Shakespeare teacher, his role in King Kong, and past roles in Shortland Street and Xena: Warrior Princess...oh yeah, and a little on the seals.
We were on tour with a family of five: a couple, their two gorgeous little ones and their precocious niece, and a lady from Switzerland called Stephanie, who provided us with some top-class entertainment when a bee flew down her jacket, she started dancing and squealing round the beach, with her coffee flying everywhere, including all over the kids! Shame she missed the precocious one though. The tour was really good, we saw lots of seals and sheep (we had to drive through a farm to get there), and Todd pointed out some locations they used for Lord of The Rings, and the Red Rocks they used for Skull Island in King Kong.
When we got back to the city, we went to an outdoor store - not our usual choice for spending $300 (110 quid) on a pair of shoes, but with the Inca Trail coming up in a few weeks, a pair of walking boots was a necessity for Nat which she was not - and is still not- happy about. They're not even pretty! Then it was back to Georgie to drive up to Waitomo, new CD's at the ready!
