For my time off this week, I ventured to Ithaca with Jenna and the family she nannies for. Ithaca is about 3 hours away and right next to the Finger Lakes, its also the town where 'Road Trip' was filmed as its the home of Cornell University. Its a small but beautiful city, set right in the middle of a vally and has the catchphrase "Ithaca is gorges" because of all the gorges cut into the surrounding mountains.
We only had Friday night there because we had to leave early again on Saturday to get back so we tried to pack as much in as possible. We went up to Cornell Uni - took the bus which was comical, because after asking the bus driver 1 question he proceeded to give us a guided tour around the city, all for 50cents! The uni is massive, with beautiful old buildings; the students also don't just have a student union but an actual 'college town' which is about the size of Edinburgh's whole campus filled with shops, bars, resturants and apartments. Managed to get a nice glass of rose there while we sheltered from the instant rain shower that is so common in this area - not very good for the hair though!
We then went ot a classic american pub, got two beers and looked like two typical tourists asking the barman to take our photo several times, however they enjoyed our accents so much we got lots of recommendations on the best nightlife and even got a drink on the house! We had the most amazing meal in a Taste of Thai, can't describe how good it tasted after 4 weeks of camp food!
Went to a bar called 'Second Floor' after for a cocktail, managed to get a cosmo! However it was pure vodka and after two I was feeling very drunk! Met some locals and somehow got into playing pool - yes I know, I can't play pool, but for some reason I managed to sink about 5 balls! Very Impressed.
Overall had a great time, Ithaca is very much an alternative town though, lots of hippy/african shops, vegan resturants & cafes, used book shops etc but it had the most friendliest people Ive ever met. Did feel like s*** the next morning tho... not having another cocktail til Im home!
