10th We were off to a tiring start, we arrived at 4am, went to the hostel we had booked and asked if we could check in (very) early! they said not until 8am and we didnt want to pay for a full night for 4hours sleep! so we dumped our bags and went for a wonder. We ended up on a park bench, to watch the sunrise, then headed to an internet cafe. Pretty boring but we were on a budget! We then slept until midday, and had another explore in the daylight. Its full of war monuments and history. We then tested the pool and went and brought our own food from supermarket - simple diet of bread, cheese, lettuce, pasta and beans! That night there was an amazing electrical lightening storm!!! Never seen anything like it!!!
11th We went for a bike ride which was good. Saw the burnett house -which survived the war and cyclone. We rode beside bright red beaches, then headed to the museum and art gallery which I thought was really good - Vicci not so much!! It wasnt so good to see all the deadly creatures in australia! I really liked the mixture of creative artwork-aborigional-string creatures and more! Really interesting and shocking to learn about cyclone Tracy as well. We also saw a stuffed 17ft crocodile called sweetheart. We then biked to Fanny Bay. We were going to swim in Lake alexander but it was pretty slimy and the sea is out of bounds cos of the jellys! We had our sandwhiches lol and went to city view point. It then started to rain, great timing for my flat tyre!! Had a massive sweat off trying to cycle back! Then pool, dinner, rained some more and bed!
12th Hardly slept - very windy. We had an early start to litchfield national park - STILL RAINING!!! we thought it was australias summer, but apparently thats wet season too!! A crazy gay aborigional man either high or drunk started talking to us when we waited for the bus. Went on about the priminister saying sorry to his people. We didn't understand until a girl with us explained the stolen generations - where the government took away the aborigional kids from their parents to be brought up in the city with white people. Sounded shocking, would love to have read about it but struggled to find a book on it. On the bus was a nice group of people, we were very entertained by an old dude dancing fancy to the music! We went on a jumping croc cruise to start - really awesome, didn't know they could jump how they did. The lady held bait over board and they jump up for it. We went to Wangi falls, and some others (can't remember names) but some were shut for wet season as crocodiles can get into the swimming sections!! no thanks!!It rained all day but the waterfalls were good. We swam for a bit, then went to see the magnetic termite mounds (only place to see them) and they are built with 2 flat sides to regulate the temperature depending on the position of the sun. We made some friends and met up with them for drinks and a night out. Good bars and friendly police!!
