Naomi's World
While Gary nearly got arrested for political crimes crossing the border from Vietnam into China, Helen and I glided through trouble free. The rather threatening border control phased us for a mere moment... will explain in detail on return!!
So China!!! a land of beautiful architecture, noodles, rice, tea, no English speakers and so so much more...
We started in Kunming... for someone who is not so keen on shopping, the shopping was pretty impressive... Sarah, Filly and Laur...you would have loved it! I have heard the Shanghai 100 times more so! I may come back fairly trendy... imagine that!
We made our way North to Dali. An traditional old Chinese town. We stayed in a cool bohemian hostel in the mountains nearby. Here, we ate dinner with the family, there was an "Art hut" and a dog that looked like a cat that decided to attack me... and ripped my skirt.... classy! (photos to come of this insane, natural phenomenon)
Following from this we made our way to Tiger Leaping Gorge... Here, we went trekking for 4 days... got lost, ended up climbing down rock faces and made it back in one piece. Gary has later quoted me at the point of climbing down the rocks saying "I'm going to tell viv what your making me do!" I have seen beautiful mountains, rivers, beaches and towns, but Tiger Leaping Gorge does not compare to anything that I have seen before. The enormity of it was overwhelming. It was scenery that we just could not get used to. We stayed in a Tibeten lodge at 2500ft above the Yangzi River that ran through the gorge. For the next few nights we stayed at various guest houses along the way. The top of the cliffs/mountains surrounding the river we 5000 ft. Just stunning.
We are now recovering in Lijiang, an old town much like Dali. Lots of Chinese tourists who want their picture taken with us. A little bit disconcerting. This afternoon we are getting a flight to Shanghai. Im very excited. Someone described it as "Chicago with lots of Chinese". Hopefully trips to the theatre, dance shows, Jazz clubs and bars... hurrah!
Thanks for all the messages. They are always so nice to read, I am, afterall, a long way from home.
all my love
Naomi
