Hi again everyone!
I have a bit of time to waste so thought I would write a blog about what we've been up to since I last wrote. The weather here can't decide between whether it wants to be sunny or raining - so it's one of those 'jacket on, jacket off, jacket on' times!
I'll have to start by telling you something extremely funny that happened last night. Lydia and I had just come in from her dance practise and we were both really tired. I decided to just flop on the living room floor so I just lay there with my arms out. Lydia then decided to do the same thing, and attempted to leap gracefully on the floor. Unfortunately it was about as graceful as a hippo and she landed with her knee on my little finger, and all her weight on the one knee! As you can probably guess it hurt quite a lot (understatement) but it was so funny that I was in hysterics on the floor, so it was a bit like 'hahahaha OW hahahaha OWWWWW haha OW'. She then rushed off to get some frozen peas to put on my finger and returned with a big of peas that had all stuck together so it was like the titanic iceberg made of peas. After a while it got too cold so Lydia would blow hot air on it! We had to alternate like this for a while until it stopped throbbing - although it was kind of red and swollen still. Despite the pain it was very amusing!
Back to today... this morning I went to work with Emily (Lydia's sister). She works in a nursery (although they call them preschools here) called Lilliput Preschool. It was a really nice place actually and the kids were all lovely, although some of them spoke so quietly or with such a strong accent that i couldn't understand a bloomin' word they said, so i had to smile and nod a few times! It was really nice though because I just helped out with all the kids like I was one of the staff there and they were all really nice to me. I did end up reading about 50,000 (seemed like) stories to them throughout the morning, and each book at least 3 times as different children came and asked me to read to them! There was one book about a Maori girl and her name was something Mere Mikyasha or something so I had no idea how to pronounce that one!
It was funny being around all the kids who have grown up in New Zealand and have quite strong kiwi accents. It is difficult to understand sometimes and I think they found it tricky to understand me sometimes too, but we got on really well and I had a brilliant time. The kids didn't seem to notice that they'd never met me before either, so just treated me like any other person who works there which was really nice for me and helped me join in! Although there was one girl who I was sitting next to at the painting table and she was trying to tell me something. But she got so excited that when the words finally came out, so did about a litre of spit which went all over my face! Even she looked shocked and said sorry very sheepishly, but it did make me laugh although it was quite gross really!
So that was my encounter with the preschool here in New Zealand, I had a fantastic time and might actually end up going back there at some point, depending on what else is happening. Nothing else extremely exciting has happened today, but it's been a good day and I've had fun. Lydia is at her maths tutor at the moment but will be back soon then I'm sure there will be much hilarity once again in the Bennett household!
Speak soon, have fun!
