The sea is incredibly calm today... I mean incredibly calm. Although we still feel the ship rocking back and forth slightly, when you look outside it is like looking at a lake. In the distance there are a few ships on the horizon that make you feel like there is life out there. We were thinking something we hadn't seen in awhile was a plane. It is interesting to think about not seeing a plane in the sky for about 4 weeks. Anyway, the sun is out and the sea is calm and we have 4 days until we get to Ghana.
Today, we passed by Cape Verde. The Republic of Cape Verde is a chain of 15 islands about 550 kilometers off the coast of Western Africa. The islands were colonized by the Portuguese in the 15th Century. They have a population of 429,500 and have a literacy rate of around 85%. We could barely see the islands off the port (left) side of the ship. But, the seas were so calm today that we saw a school of dolphins. There were probably 15 of them just bobbing around in the ocean. It was really beautiful. One thing that was disturbing was all of the garbage that we saw in the water today. There were bits of yellow paper and some plastic. It was really strange to see that garbage - we hadn't seen anything like that until now.
The Global Studies lecture today was given by the Vice President of IBM Global. She spoke about sustainability and gave many disturbing facts about what is going to happen to our planet if we don't get our stuff together ASAP! She was a great speaker!
We also played a really fun game with a lot of the faculty and staff up in the Glazer faculty lounge. It is like a three level charades and they call it HAM CHUNK. Crazy fun!
We are putting together a cabaret featuring students, faculty and staff. We have about 13 acts and the students are in charge of their own numbers and it looks like they will be great... we shall see.
Fun facts:
-Laundry on the ship costs $6 per bag and faculty can do laundry whenever they want, but students have particular days that they can turn in their bags.
-We are not allowed to have an iron. If you want your clothes ironed you have to send them to the laundry.

Kevin Great to hear all is well - what an experience! No amount of material things could bring the satisfaction of the awesome lifetime memories you are gathering. Call if you need a substitute!
