Bangkok - 1st stop. we have spent 4 days on Khao San Road, the "backpackers" area of Bangkok. It is the maddest place ever, and it never stops ALL day and night. Something different is happening on the street constantly and you could spend hours just sat people watching without realising, it's fasinating! You can't leave this road without havimng your hair done in some crazy style (we have had extensions in ours) and eating traditional Thai food like Noodles, Bananna pancakes and deep fried inspects (even Loz has given everything a go, apart from the insects), off the street stalls, it's the done thing around here!
The whether is very hot and sticky, and doesn't cool down much at night. The Road are Jammed 24/7 and it takes ages to do a ten minute jouney, but petrol is very cheap(between 3/4p a ltr). If only! Tuk Tuks are fun, but can be annoying, as they always try and take you to extra shops and get you to look, as if you stay for 5 mins they get petol tokens, We have learn't to say no , but it was difficult at first as we didn't understand them!
Bangkok, is like been on a completely different planet, anything goes here and they have no fear whatsoever! the word to describe Khao San Rd is "Khaotic" " mental mental chickin oriental" Loz's contribution!we both think 4 days here has been just the right amount of time to take in the crazy atmoshphere and see the rest of Bangkok, we will tell you about in a min!
One thing we have noticed here is how friendly everyone is, especially the Thai people, they talk to you in the street, just out of friendliness! The Thai people and really religious and pray all the time, after the have sold something they bless the stock with the money and praying. The thai people also just eat constantly, they eat little bits of food all day and night, and families sit on the road side around a make do table (usually a box)and they eat just when ever , they also drink out of plastic bags with a straw!!. Think we have tasken up this lifestyle already, as we have just had a meal at 3pm (Nadz= Thai Green Veg Curry, Loz= Burger and chips with Ketchup)There has been a lot to see and do in these last 4 days, so we have been very busy chicks!
On day 1, we went to see the Big Buddha (or big Bugga temple as Loz just said as she was reading)and the NBK shopping centre, which sells anything and everything you can imagine and about 10 times bigger than Meadowhall !
On day 2 we went to Chatuchak market, (when we eventually got there, cos the Tuk Tuk man dropped us off at this dodgy local street market probably on purpose, because we didn't look in the shop where he took us long enough for him to get his pertol coupon) The little place where he dropped us was scary and we had to get back onto the main road quickly cos everyone was staring.
The Chatuchak market was the "king of all markets", it covered 35 acres! We spent 2 and 1/2 hours there and we only just touched it. It sold everything, even animals!
On the way back, we spotted a zoo, so in the afternoon went there! It was no normal zoo, there was all kinds of wiered Asian animals, that we have never heard of and real exciting thing like bears and tigers. We saw Crocs, Hippo, Rino, Giraffe's,elephants, huge birds that looked like they were straight out of a cartoon, it was brilliant!!
The zoo was in an area called "Dusit" and this is where the royal palace is where the king lives. We only drove around his palace, but it was amazing to see, it was huge and very"extravagant" (we think this is the right word!) We actually had to go in the back way to the zoo as the road was closed because the King was home. Thai people adore the King, is plastered everywhere, we wondered why everyone was wearing the same yellow t-shirt, but soon figgered ou that it was to show that they support the king. The Royal palace is surrounded by army men and there are veen a few on the streets!
On day 3 we planned to go to the floating market, but missed it as it was too late, so we went to the Grand Palace and the Reclyning Buddha! (Bugga). The grand Palace is where the King used to live and it was unbelievable, there was huge buildings, and figures, covered in colourful msaic mirrors and hand painted pictures, everything was really glittery and detailed. Really nice! The reclyning Budda (bugga) was absolutely ginormous (46m long and 15 metres high)!!! it was covered in gold. We turned up at these places, without thinking about getting covered up , with it been a place of worship, so we had to borrow some clothes(down to the floor Thai skirt and a huge shirt, we looked ridiculous!) We also had to take our shoes off, and wasn't allowed to take any pictures of any shrines.
It is Halloween tomorrow and crazy Khao San road is getting ready to party, they have decorated the street and are putting stages up and all sorts! We are up at 2.45am to catch our flight to Samui, but we will def go and film and get in wiht the crowds of mad people down Khao San !!
Tropical beaches for us tomorrow i think!
We will put some pics on as soon as we can but need to wait till we have a few more so it is worth transfering them to a disk, as you can't upload them directly!
Will update you all of the next place soon
Loz and Nadz xx
