Fraiser Island- We had to meet up in the bar at 6.30am on Monday morning, where we were put into groups. Some people where sent off to do the groups food shopping and others had different responsilities like the alchohol shopping and loading the van, by 9am all the organising was done and we were on our way- not really knowing where we were going! After a half hour ferry crossing we arrived on Fraiser Island, the worlds largest sand Island. After an hour of off road driving though the Island we reached the 1st stop which had huge sand dunes to run down with a refreshing fresh water lake at the bottom, the next stop was the ship wreck, which was pretty cool, it had been on the beach for over 70 years. In our group of 11, there was 3 of us that could do the driving over the 3 days. Vicky drove us from the 4 wheel drive centre, onto the ferry and to the first stop on the Island, which put her off and she didnt want to drive again so that left Nadz and Rach. Rach drove upto the ship wreck and Nadz drove to the base camp after that. The van was a beast, the wheels was nearly bigger then us. With 11 people and 3 days of camping equipment, the van was really top heavy. Beach driving sounds easy, which on hard sand is fine ( Loz had a little drive along - not bad for her first time driving alone- its the biggest van ever and she had 10 passengers! ha !) but driving on the soft sand is like driving on ice and even a 4x4 van can get stuck easily, luckily we only got stuck once and knew how to rectify the situation, the tide was coming in fast and Rach went into panic mode but we made it in time after a lot of stress and shouting. At camp we had two 6 man tents so us 3 shared with 2 girls called Vicky and Faye as there was an atmosphere with the Canadain girls who nobody liked coz they were lazy and rude!!! After a full days off road adventure we had a BBQ for dinner and drank some good old goon! Nadz and Rach ended up going down to the beach with some other people but been the only two driving they gave up the goon pretty early.
We were up at 6am the next day and by 8.30 we had reached the Champaign Pools and dug our way out of the soft sand after getting stuck, Nadz is an expert at off roading now- normal driving is going to seem so boring!
The Champaign Pools was good, the water came crashing over the top and falling down the rocks giving the effect of bubbly champaign. Later that morning we walked along the beach to the Indian Heads lookout point, when we reached the top it looked amazing, the views where fantastic and there was a sheer drop down to the sea. The next stop that day was Lake Allom, where there was lots of little cute turtles popping there heads out of the water and having a look around. The next day we had to be up at 5.30am, the other half of our group had been really greedy and had eaten all we had for breakfast so we had to go without, when it came to lunch time we had 2 tins of cold beans and 2 tins of creamed sweetcorn between us, yum yum! it was sickening, the table next to us a big slap up meal, thats the last time we will be getting Canadains to do our shopping! The highlight of the day was Lake McKenzie, it was beautiful, the sand was that white you had to wear our sunnies, you could also clean your silver with the sand which made our dog tags gleaming, this was the last place to visit on our trip before going back to the 4 wheel drive centre to drop off the van and all the equipment, we had the best time but it sure was nice to sleep in a bed again!
Keep tuned in for our Whitsunday Island Adventure!!!!!
