Neil's Round the World Trip!
We got up early and walked down to the pick-up spot in the main street of Queenstown. Our driver then took ourselves and some other crazy people to a canyon where the Shotover river rapids run through (5 mins outside the town).
We walked down a windy path from the car park and reached the wooden hut perched right on the edge of the cliff. An Aussie and his Indonesian wife went first, then Ben who screamed like a girl! 2 Canadians followed after him. It was quite funny on the health conditions warning board i.e please inform if you suffer from heart conditions etc they have Canadian on the list! Anyway all the people before me were holding on to the rope when they jumped, so I was egged on by the canyon guys to jump superman style...so I did! It's really nerve-wracking looking over the edge but after a few deep breaths and some mental strength you can do it. The fall was amazing, was about 15 seconds. It wasn't over once I'd swung across the canyon as they winch you back to the hut which is scary as you are hanging above the canyon for a while. I walked around very pleased with myself; I've thrown myself off a cliff..good for me! While you are still high on adrenalin the canyon boys try and make you buy over-priced photos..and you buy them!
We got back to the town and booked our hostel in Franz Josef tonight. We then went up the mountain overlooking the town on a gondola. The views were amazing and the Remarkable Mountains are just so remarkable. We then went on the luge and I crashed into a board. I then drove us to Franz Josef township.
We stopped at the picturesque town of Wanaka and had lunch which consisted of (are you listening Monteforte? this is important!) Steak Pie and sickly strawberry flavoured milk. We then drove north to Haast in torrential rain and had coffee there. We finally reached Chateau Franz and checked in. We booked our day walk up the glacier for the following day. We then made tacos and were the envy of the rest of the hostel as they made their pathetic pasta & sauce combos..haha!!
We chatted to a Canadian and a Londoner obviously just speaking to us so they could get their hands on our scrumptious grub. We were then urged by a drunk Kiwi to go drinking but as he was slurring his words and using the sink to hold himself up, we politely declined; he was ejected moments late.
So we had a quick look on t'Ãnternet and off to sleep at 12.30 again up early tomorrow for the glacier walk!
