The next day we woke up at 4am to get the 5am boat back to the mainland where we got a bus across to Merida. We decided as we were going back to our backpacker ways to take this bull by the horns, as they say, and do two towns without booking a hostel through night buses! Arriving at Merida at 12ish we trekked across the city to the next bus station and found a locker to leave our bags. Eventually this was all sorted and we were relieved to go out and explore the city for a few hours before heading back to the bus station for another bus. The town was big and we saw some lovely central parks, shops, cafes and museums. One of the museums had a 'What is Mexico?' photography competition which was really interesting and gave us tips of where to visit on our trip! After an early start and a full day walking around we were exhausted and headed back to the bus station to wait for our 10pm night bus to Palenque. This time did pass quickly with Cassie and I setting up a little work station near the sockets and organising photos, emails, blog and other things I always put off! Once on the night bus, the most uncomfy bus I have ever sat on, I eventually managed to get some disturbed sleep! We arrived at 6:30am in Palenque and headed to a hostel for our meeting point to go our booked tour of the ruins, waterfall and pools!
Surprisingly fresh after a smoothie we headed out to the ruins of Palenque. These ruins were my favourite so far. Truly in the rainforest, very well restored with the chance to go into the pyramids and explore the internal structure it really felt like I got a feel for what they would have been like in their hay day! We didn't have a guide so we got to take our time or go as fast as we liked! After this we got taken to a huge waterfall where we swam in the water to refresh ourselves and relax. Next stop was the Agua Azul (Blue Water Pools), not so blue at this time of year as during the rainy season sediments are washed down; however, we still enjoyed the pools and had a dip before getting our next and final long journey for a few days to San Cristobel! The heart of the Chipas State which had been compared to Antigua in Guatemala! What a treat we had in store for us...we definitely deserve this!
