umm its thanksgiving??? i didnt even remember until today! oh..what i would do for some cheesecake! i love cheesecake more than a fat kid AND p. diddy combined! :( anyway, i will probably go for some guinea fowl and banku later hahaha. unforunately, i didn't bring the disc with all my latest photos because we have been travelling to see people too much these days, but out of all the visits, i am most happy that i met some of the women who came from the uk to work with vso ( volunteer services organization) in ghana. I especially admire one of the ladies who is actually from barbados but grew up in london. she is helping to empower the women in the communities at a city called nadowli...and i can just imagine the challenges she must be facing, especially clashing with the historical traditions and family institutions. I am planning on meeting her again to discuss more about what she has been doing for the last 2 years, but in the meantime, i have talked to another lady about helping volunteer with an after-school program and with other tasks at a village called kaleo. I just heard that there are some canadians at wa, where we are right now, and i hope i get to meet them too. Overall, vso is a very reputable organization and just to have the opportunity to shadow some of the workers would be an honor, so i am very excited for the month of november. (check out their site at www.vsocan.org)
As for the upcoming weeks though, I will be going back to accra (the capital) to celebrate my 21st birthday with my sister and cousin so i am just counting the days!!!! kebabs, smirnoff's, fanta's, the beach, maybe cape coast, fan milk ice cream....everything to help us enjoy the time together (and the freedom ;).
I know that i will have to come back soon to upload the pictures and update some more, and hopefully within that time we will catch the kobina festival (in lowra) that is a big event because of the dancing and music. Until then, I will be trying to catch episodes of miss malaika (an african beauty contest) and maybe even big brother africa! haahahaha I have to say, the past few days have really shown me the lengths of wa hospitality - they have definitely made me feel at home, and they have welcomed me as a fellow "dagaarti"...or dagaarti-canadian as they say :) If any one would like to travel to africa, I can definitely testify that the people in Ghana are probably the most friendliest people in the continent and Ghana would be a perfect destination if it is ur first trip over here (the women at vso said the same thing).
Also, another great thing that should be admired about wa, ghana, is how well muslims and christians have integrated and mixed together here. I don't think the tolerance of the muslim region could ever be duplicated in the west...atleast not within the next 10 years. People pray how they like, to "whom" they like, and the mother may be muslim whilst her son is a christian, and they may laugh and make fun of each other, but relationships remain unchanged.
Anyway, I will be back next week or so to upload the photos and update. I hope everyone had a great thanksgiving and filled up their bellies nice n plenty...maybe i will go have a guiness to celebrate too ;)
ciao
