On Monday at 7:30 a.m., I arrived in Casablanca, Morocco, and I was a bit tired. But atleast I had my tea in the morning, thanks to the Royal Air Maroc airline - to anyone who will use this airline, they are very good and the landing was sooo smooth. Everyone was clapping and I thought the people were crazy, until later on when I took my next flight and it was rough as hell! Anyway, accommodation had been provided to me even though I was taking my flight at 11 pm. Normally they only provide hotel accommodation to those who stay at least 24 hrs in Casablanca.
Anyway...so far I officially suck at travel blogs cuz I have not written alot. But really, it's not my fault because it has been hard to get time to go to the internet cafe and when I have gone there has either been a blackout or my computer froze. Anyway I have been in Ghana almost two weeks now and I must say it has been a pleasant experience. My aunt, uncle, sister and cousins have been very friendly and they have been teaching me so much about the dagaarti culture. The dagaarti are northerners and they speak dagaare or/and wala, so they have been teaching me some phrases. It is short and choppy and has been compared to cantonese...so its not very easy. Anyway I will be going to the north on saturday so I wanted to upload my photos cuz I dont know when I will get a chance to write again. If I don't get time to do it, it's on my facebook page.
I have been eating banku and fufu, which are both fermented maize. Its not the first time i tried fufu but lawd do I wish it was the last. I wont front, i do not like fufu, but i love kenkey and banku with some nice tomato stew sauce. Also, in the north they consider pork a delicacy...I was not pleased to here this after several years of not eating that stuff. I went two nights just stuffing the pork in my mouth and chewing for my life...but after I had to tell my sister I can't stand the meat. I feel bad tho bcuz the last thing I want to be is a burden on the family. Other than that we have been having milo, which is basically hot chocolate, tampico, which is like tang (hahaah..."tang"), and now i discovered they have chocolate soy milk here so that is hype. Wow...I have so much stuff to talk about but so little time...hopefully soon I get atleast one whole day to edit stuff and write all the stuff i want.
Just before I go, a lil update:
-there has been flooding in the eastern area causing many to be displaced, which was preceded by a long drought, so its very sad
-there are still many women (mosty fra-fra who are also northerners like dagaarti) who come to the south end to work and sell and who end up sleeping on the streets and being raped at night by gangs. They have children and their children end up running around and pickpocketing as well...its a vicious cycle, but after organizations have tried to educate the fra-fra and provide shelter, it still continues.
- they are doing a large education reform here to change the system...i will have to look into this more later
-i saw a building that they are constructing just by the airport for tourists and businesses and they are using 40 million to create this building which really angers me, because they should be using this money to clean up the streets.
I know right now it sounds like I am saying some negative things about Ghana...but when I came I wanted to acknowledge the good and the bad, mostly because I am very interetsted in development issues, and I think it's important to recognize them for resolutions in the future.
That's all for now, but I definitely have so much to write about this interesting country...my homeland :)
