Hello Everyone! Ths is our first blog entery whilst we are away. Johnannesburg, land of the gold. We have spent two days recovering fromJet lag, 11 hours is a long flight slightly taxing on the body.
Johannesburg is a busy place, still very segregated between the blacks and whites. We are in a lovely hostel with a pool a luxury we never expected : ) There is electic fencing everywhere, because of the difference between the rich and the poor. People are lining the roads as they are looking for work, children are walking in the streets and parents with shopping balanced on their heads. People look at you, black or white, you stand out a bit as a tourist.
We visited the Apartheid Museum yesterday, we read stories of Steve Biko and Nelson Mandelas plight for freedom. It brought me to tears. . We later visited Jenko monument, where a young blak childwas murdered by the poice just because he was protesting for education for all.
Seb our taxi driver we hired for the day was fab he told us lots of stories which was interesting and gave us a better understanding of the different cultures in Joh'burg. He later took us to Soweto where we visited the slums and townships. There we saw nelson mandeas home which was opposite Bishop Desmond Tu Tu. All new to us : )
After a long day we crashed back at the hostel. We have now arranged to go on a three day Safari at Kruger National Park : ) Woo Hoo ...We are going to getting eaten, if not by the lions, but the mosquitos. Love to all, we will keep you posted xxx
