Today we visited Ayuttaya, the ancient capital of Siam. We went there with Noi, my Thai friend from Bangkok whom I met in Bali a month ago. It was so great to explore all the temples in this peaceful and beautiful city. We visited Wat Phra Mahathat (with the Buddha in the tree trunk), Wat Phanan Choeng with its 19m high Buddha statue, Wat Chai Wattanaram with impressive Khmer-style central prang, Wat Yai Chaimongkhon with the reclining Buddha statue. We also visited the Ayuthaya floating market, which was a new shopping center with shops and restaurant. We had delicious dinner there - snakehead fish stuffed with lemongrass and salted and grilled, soft shell crab dish, and Tom-Yom. Afterwards we watched a show there at a small theater, where the actors were playing out scenes of the famous battle between Siam and Burmese soldiers in the war over Ayuthaya. I am really impressed with Thai hospitality and really enjoy meeting Thai people.
