We headed into Alberta on Hi-Way #1 towards Lake Louise. There is nothing quite like driving through the Rocky Mountains. The road was better, including the new Park Bridge outside of Golden. As you come off the bridge you pass through a cut they made in the rock over 100 feet high on either side of you. The rivers are running quite high and are starting to show their glacial beginnings by their brilliant blue/green hue. We stopped at a small town called Field with a very large Tourist Info and gathered info for our trek through Banf National Park. This tiny community was surrounded by towering mountains and consisted mainly of coffee shops, Guest Houses and B&B's. This is such a beautiful area with it's green forest, and jagged peaks.
Cam had picked up a brochure for the Lake Louise Grizzly Bear Gondola rides so we decided that he should give it a try. I, being sensible stayed on the ground! It was extremely hot so I found some shade and watched him take the chair lift up a ski run. He was lucky enough to spot a young Grizzly. An attendant told me she had worked there for 12 years and had yet to spot one.
After a nice lunch we headed up the #93 to the Saskatchewan River Crossing. We are surrounded by rugged mountains and shockingly vibrant jewel-toned teal glacial waters. An amazing place to be.
As we turned onto the #11 towards Rocky Mountain House the mountains gave way to rolling hills and soon farm land. Two hours later we arrived at Mullhurst Bay on Pigeon Lake for the night.
