Zurich, Switzerland
The good thing about flying with an Arabic airline is they serve men first.
The vegetarian next to me slept the first 14 hours of the flight. I commented on her long sleep when she woke. She slept so much because she was sick. Of course.
Bizarrely, when you land at Zurich you catch a train to the baggage claim section. A passport stamp and you are through.... No customs check.
So, here we are in Zurich.
We booked three nights accomodation. It was expensive, but my rationale was I just wanted something simple to start with, and Hotel Limmathof is near the centre of things.
But everything in Zurich is startlingly expensive. Snags, bread roll and salad....$30. We thought we'd be economical and buy stuff for breakfast. Again, rolls, ham, cheese, salad veg....$40+.
Beer is ok in cost, and varied and tasty.
Which is what I am sampling while I wait for Sylvia. She is still shopping. She "needed" a swatch, a Swiss army knife, and good old-fashioned sandals. I hate shopping anyway, but I can't bear to do the cost calculations for these "necessities".
Zurich has the feel of a country town. Cars go slow, and actually wait for pedestrians. We've hiked around town a lot, climbed the cathedral tower, had lovely cakes and coffee. The hotel is near a stylish old-town laneway, which starts out nice and ends In a brothel/ stripjoint tail. But in the daytime it's a nice walk.
The rivers through town are stunningly clear, fast-flowing and gloriously green. When the sun is shining it's very pretty, but is has been mostly overcast and raining so far.
I had hoped to go swimming, but pretty as it looks it's too cold just now.
