The 13th May is our (22nd) wedding anniversary. For the first time Alan was in charge of booking a trip away. Angela had no idea where we were going until we got in the car to leave.
It turned out that Alan had planned an amazing (if you like that kind of thing) weekend. At this point it's probably worth mentioning that Angela has a bit of an obsession with vintage crockery.
We were going to Stoke on Trent! When Alan handed over the itinerary There was almost tears BUT in a good way.
He had planned a visit to Wedgwood. A tour of the factory, visit to their museum, lunch in their restaurant AND a pottery lesson were part of the day. The pots we throw get sent to our home once they're fired.
We had a 3 hour drive, not leaving until 8 pm, and as Alan had been coaching all evening, the plan was to stop en route for dinner.
At 10pm we pulled into a service station in search of food having failed to spot anywhere better to eat. All of the food vendors had just closed leaving us a choice between W H Smith and Starbucks. Starbucks had seats so they won!
We'd passed a number of signs on the road telling us that a section of the M6 was closed, but as we were on that section, we blithely ignored it until....
Leaving the service station the exit onto the motorway was closed. We were trapped. We had a hotel room to get to. We were tired. We wanted to get to Stoke (not a sentence we thought we'd ever say). We had no way out
