Wayne's & Bonnie's Travels
Greenock is the port city for Glasgow. It used to be a major shipbuilding city with about 40 companies but all but two of them have had to close. We spent the day touring the Scottish Highlands with 14 other Cruise Critic members. Out driver/guide, Garry, is a Greenock native and showed great pride in being a Scot. He wore a kilt but he said it was not just for our sake – he prefers to wear it instead of pants. In answer to the question of what is underneath he said about half wear something and half nothing. It was cloudy and misty when we left Greenock but it cleared up to be a beautiful sunny day when we got the Highlands. We visited Inveraray Castle which is still occupied by the Duke of Argyll. They allow tourist visits to help them afford to keep the castle. It is beautifully furnished and had over 1,300 pieces of art. It was used to film the Scottish scenes in Downton Abbey. We spent much of the day around Lock Lomond which is Scotland's 2nd largest lake. Of course we had to stop for lunch at a pub. The fish and chips and beer were delicious. No one dared to try the haggis. It is an exciting time in Scotland. They vote tomorrow on whether they will become an independent country or stay part of the United Kingdom. We saw about an even number of Yes (independence) and No signs.
We have friends who have the largest balcony we have ever seen on a cruise ship. They have a sailaway party each day we leave a port and we go there each for most sailaways. There we over 10 of us last night. The port had a bagpipe band playing and many locals came to see us leave. It was a sunny and fairly warm evening. It all resulted in a very enjoyable experience.

Carole Must have been very interesting being there before the vote...Did you see the yes and no signs every where?
mreasier There were several signs, but not as many as we expected.
