We set off from Penang at around 9am, arriving in Melaka for about 5pm. This was possibly one of the best buses we've ever been on and i mean in England too. The seats were huge with loads of leg room. The only down side to this journey was we didn't stop for the toilet or dinner or anything.. so all we had had all day was a couple of curry puffs in the morning on the way to the bus station. Once arriving to the bus station we spotted a cheeky Mc Donalds .. we were that hungry we couldn't resist it. After stuffing our faces at Mc d's we had to find a local bus to catch into town as it was a fair distance away. We got dropped off at the town square, so out came the Lonely Planet to look at the map of Melaka to find out where we needed to go for our guesthouse... Only the map was wrong.. we didnt have a clue .. for the first time travelling we didnt actually have a clue which way to head. After asking a local for directions we still managed to get lost and had to ask somebody else.. eventually we found 'Tony's Guesthouse' with a sign on the door 'Back in 20 Mins' ... soo we sat down and waited... Lucy stood up to go for a little wander and as soon as she stood up she shouted ' What the heck is that?' walking a little out of the gate to get a better look she called Peter to come and look... It was a HUGE monitor Lizard just walking by the side of a drain. Lucy was glad Peter got a glimpse of it otherwise i don't think he would have believed her and thought she was over- exaggerating. Unfortunately we didnt get a photo because the camera was locked away in one of our bags. From that day on we hunted for Monitor Lizards throughout the whole time we were in Melaka. Anyways back to waiting at the guesthouse.. Tony came down from upstairs and asked us if we wanted a room for the night .. we replied ' Erm we've booked 3 nights 10th - 12th' Tony's reply to that was ' I don't have any booking, im sorry.' Lucy looked at Peter and said ' Well i DEFINITELY booked it.'
After checking our emails for the comfimation Peter looked at Lucy and said ' BLOODY MAY... 10TH, 11TH & 12TH OF BLOODY MAY.. only 3 months early'
Lucy just laughed and thought to herself what a silly idiot. Luckily Tony had one room left and we could have that one.
That night we had a wander onto Jonker walking street where there were stalls lining the road, at the beginning of the road was a water feature of a massive dragon.. water came out of its mouth as it dangled from the buildings.
The following morning we walked around Melaka, ate at a rubbish Indian for dinner and then had a fun afternoon.. We saw some Segways and immediately wanted to go on them.. sooo we did. We got a quick briefing at the beginning and got taught how to use them.. giving us a little obstacle course to move around on them. They were really fun to go on and would definitely go them again. After going on the segways we walked up a hill to the remainings of St Peter's Church to find a man holding an Iguana.. you could hold the Iguana for 5RM.. which is £1..So of course Peter wanted to hold it..
After holding the Iguana we walked down by the river and had a glass of homemade lemonade while scanning for Monitor Lizards... still no luck.
That night we just wandered out had a chinese, couple of beers and watched the football. The beers ended up being a bit more expensive than we thought after getting the bill, they had put a 10% service charge and 6% goverment tax onto them... bloody service charge..the woman only opened a bottle of beer. Walking back to the guesthouse we decided to get a sausage each from a street stall.. where the lady were cooking the sausages the fat spat out onto Peter's arm.. Peter's face were a picture and got quite aggressive towards the lady under his breathe. Lucy couldnt stop giggling.
The last day in Melaka we spent chilling out and trying to get on top of our blog (which we still havent managed to do.) Also we organised what we wanted to do in Borneo and emailed a few companies to book certain things. All in all a very productive day.
Across the road from our guesthouse was a restaurant call Capitol Satay, this restaurant had been packed for the whole three days we were there with massive queues at night of about 30 people or more.. every single night. Our last night we decided to give it a go, obviously its got to be good. So we got in the queue and waited and waited ... a couple of doors down there was the same sort of restaurtant which was quieter, so we decided to leave the queue and eat there instead... BIG MISTAKE!!! It was possibley the crappest meal yet.. infact we wouldnt even call it a meal.. just little bits of meat and fish on sticks that you cook yourself.
After the dissapointing tea we headed to the river for the night cruise.. at the beginning of the cruise we saw all the paintings on the buildings which were very interesting but after that is turned out to be very boring.. this is when we started looking for lizards again...
The following morning we checked out and told Tony that we wouldn't be back in May..
Next stop Kuala Lumpur...
