Hi Everyone
Just a quick update on what we have been up to. We spent the last three weeks traveling from Brisbane to Melbourne and driving the Great Ocean Road, which was really beautiful and great fun.
When we left Brisbane we really wanted to spend a couple of days in Byron Bay, but the weather has not been that great and Queensland and North New South Wales had a lot of rain and flooding which is good for them during the drought - not so great for those in a camper and wanting to enjoy the sun! Although we did have a great time and just sped down to Sydney to spend a couple of days with our friends Peter & Iris (thanks for having us!). We also had a few problems with the camper we hired, but that'll be a good story when we get home,.
From Sydney we took the coastal route towards Melbourne and stopped off at South Durra - lovely beach and where kangaroos came onto the camp site at night. Eden, Lakes Entrance and onto Philip Island which was a great place and home to the Grand Prix racing circuit and the cutest colony of Fairy Penguins! After that we bypassed Melbourne via the ferry and headed to Torquay the surf capital of Oz. This just happened to coincide with Matt's Birthday so he was happy spending time shopping in Surf World (outlet centre for Rip Curl, Quicksilver etc) and running around Bells Beach, pretending he was a pro surfer (watch Point Break!).
We then cruised onto the Wye River and stopped for his birthday lunch overlooking the sea - very nice, Apollo Bay - had a few drinks as you should on your Birthday and then a couple of days later finished the journey in Port Campbell as again the weather had started to turn a bit rainy again.
We popped into Ballarat for one night and were told that is was actually one of the coldest places in Victoria , so although very nice we left quite quickly for Melbourne and a bit of warmth!
Melbourne is a lovely city and we had fun sight seeing and taking it all in. We even went to Melbourne Museum! Whilst we were the Australian Open Tennis was on and you could watch on a big TV screen in Federation Square and there were lots of interesting people about.
We've had a really fun three weeks and met some really friendly people who gave us lots of good advice - Thank You. Also check out the photos as some pictures of the Great Ocean Road are amazing and you'll also see some places you will recognise.
We are now looking forward to heading to New Zealand on the 5th of Feb and then onto Thailand on the 24th, how exciting!
Hope everyone is well and thanks for all our messages and we will be catching up with you all soon.
Love Matt & Katie
P.S - Happy Birthday Bex, have a good day!!
