Moth Trap in the NZ garden
Latest Moths
End of December 2016
(Please note that any excursion adverts on this blog are placed by the web site owners and not us)
The trap was put out with the Prolite 25W Black Light bulb and with the Sylvania Mini-Linx Blacklight 20W at two locations in Stanmore Bay a short distance from my location over three nights. They stayed on all night.
Night temps were around 13 to 15 oC.
The trap was set up so that it was overlooking a cliff area covered with trees that looked out to sea.
The catches were successful and brings our total for the first 6 weeks of our stay in New Zealand to 70 different moths.
Some of the highlights are
Hygraula nitens - the Pond Moth, this is the only moth in New Zealand that has its
Caterpillar living in water.
Aenetus virescens - the Puriri Moth is New Zealand's largest moth with females getting up to 70mm long.
Gymnobathra flavidella - this normally appears around Christmas time - and it did!
I am very happy if any ID's are corrected as these are all new to me.
