The train arrived at Niagara Falls NY around 1945, having reversed into the station for the last five miles of the journey.
As one of only four people left on the train, I was greeted by John, Sandra, Mark and Bernice, my Canadian cousins. The station is somewhat isolated (one horse pony style, without the pony), so it was great that I was met. My original plan of walking across the border to Canada would have been out of the question. After a quick pit stop at duty free we headed through the border post to Canada. I'm pretty excited to make my first trip here.
Traffic in Niagara Falls (Canadian-side) was like rush hour at Piccadilly Circus (quite a contrast to the US-side), but the Festival of Lights added to my first sighting of the famous waterfall.
Another first was a stop at the Canadian coffee shop Tim Horton's. I enjoyed my creamy smooth cup of mocha. A lady came in unhappy with the world f'ng and blinding about how she would slit someone's throat. The barista asked her how he could help, to which she casually replied 'medium coffee please'. The whole cafe started laughing (it wasn't just us). The context was just so funny, with threatened murder one minute, a coffee order the next. Anyhow, the lady didn't take kindly to the laughter and cursing ensued (mainly aimed at me, as I was in the line of fire). When she was asked to leave she tried to smash the window behind us from outside. So coffee and a show!
Back to drinks at Sandra and John's. My g & t went down well and it was fun to hear about my Canadian family who I didn't know about a week ago (& vice versa).
Tomorrow is open house. I get to meet around 30 extended relatives! More soon.
