My Mephistos had a workout today. I've walked and walked. I never expected to have blackened feet by mid-afternoon, but I guess when you are in a busy city full of construction then it shouldn't be a surprise. I'm glad I wore the flat variety. I'd read about the cobbled streets of Copenhagen and I'll admit I almost twisted my ankle a couple of times.
I had planned on orientating myself with a Tour bus ride but got off at the second stop. The driver drove in a stop-start jerky fashion and the window design on top deck was not constructed with snapshots in-mind. Of course I hadn't a clue where I was, but it was by a water inlet and the street name was Nyhavn. I knew it was famous, as it's classic postcard territory with the rows of coloured buildings lining the canal. The sun blazing down was an added bonus for people catching a mid-morning coffee or beer. I stopped opposite the Hotel d'Angleterre (a grand white building with white angled shutters and topped with three Danish flags) for a much needed expresso with hot milk on the side. I decided to take pot luck and meander the cobbled lanes taking in trendy design experiences, seeing ornate historic sites and window shopping both upmarket fashion stores and everyday chain stores. I ended up at City Square and headed back towards Central Station where my hotel's based. I found a couple of supermarkets to explore - Netto, Rema 1000 and Irma. I bought a picnic lunch from Irma - Danish oatcakes, cheese, a peach and some carrot juice, all which I ate in my room before crashing. My feet hurt!
I woke again at 7pm. It was tempting to stay in but I decided to visit Tivoli opposite my hotel. I'd read online that Walt Disney found the place magical and was inspired to build the Disney experiences.
Friday night and it was thronging. The lights were coming on around the gardens. You could hear people screaming as the roller coaster zoomed by, kids laughing with joy on the merry go round rides. You can't help but smile. Well I can't anyway. I love to see happy people. The experience I thought I wouldn't like I actually really enjoyed. The fountains, Moroccan inspired buildings, lakes with fountains all make for an enchanting experience. I walked round the entire grounds before heading outside to grab dinner. I ate at Mad, an American style burger house. My portobello mushroom, haloumi cheese and fries washed down with Tuborg lager was a really welcome end to Friday evening.
