We left Venice this morning with baited breath as we got back in the Opel for another 300 kilometre jaunt to Garfagnana.
We came across the usual maniacs on the motorway and there is nothing more disconcerting than being overtaken when you are doing 150 km/h and the car is a blip on the horizon in seconds.
We got off at the Maranello exit but as today is a public holiday everything was closed and there was no easy signage to the Ferrari museum so we kept on truckin' to Tuscany. Looks like the Ferrari shop is as close as we will get now as it's about 180 km from here and most of the trip is white knuckle material.
I always knew Tarn was a lousy passenger but get her 1200 meters above sea level on single lane road with drops that make the Black Spur look like a door step, and a blind hairpin turn every 200 meters whilst being driven on the opposite side of the road and she goes postal. She has been dubbed the puffer fish with all her hyperventilating.
It's mid spring here and on the alps there is still loads of snow (thankfully none on the road) not just on the peaks but in the gullies and it gave us a wonderful vista as we climbed up the Radici Pass although we did not appreciate it fully as our hearts were in our mouths most of the time with the hairpins, collapsed sections of roads and the ever present psychotic Italian drivers whom doing less than 80 km/h is considered a mortal sin.
We were starving (and busting for a WC) and village after village everything was closed but we came across a little bar which was open in Riccovolto called Lalli's which was run by Nan's Italian clone. Seriously it is the best pizza I have had anywhere and the best coffee I have had in Italy by miles. And cheap we had 2 full size pizzas, drinks and coffee sitting down inside in Italy on a public holiday for €22 - in any of the cities you would be lucky to see change out of €50 - a real gem of a find and Nan"s clone was a sweetie.
