Wow, I have been unbelievably pants at keeping up to date with this blog, apologies. In my defence, I have had very little time to write; "Doing Italy" in 11 days is, it turns out, insanity...
Anyway, I'm currently in Florence (or Firenze as the locals call it) and later today I'm heading to Pisa (bet you can't guess why) and then on to Cinque Terre on the west coast.
Florence is beautiful. The architecture is stunning, the museums are dripping with classical culture and the people are...well lets just leave it at the stunning architecture and rich culture shall we?
That's not to say most of the Italian people aren't the warmest I've ever met but the men...Oh, my, God, the men. I have yet to meet a single female traveller here in Italy who hasn't been shouted, leered or drooled at, molested or followed. Even groups of females aren't exempt from it and if you're alone, especially after dark, just watch the hell out. Seriously. Milan was even worse. Far, far worse in fact but apparently Rome is the epitome of harassment. One Canadian girl told me "You will get molested". Wonderful, can't wait.
There is, however, a bright side to all the sleazy men: half price accomodation, (close your eyes now parents) free Shisha, free hashish, free meals, free food shopping, free drinks, a pair of shoes, free accomodation offers for Morocco, free travel advice, free metro pass, free translator services... Well, silver lining and all that.
Aside from the sleazy men, Italy is gorgeously and authentically beautiful. I have had to forgo Venice for this trip due to time constraints (grr...) but I'm still planning to go to Pisa, Cinque Terre, Siena, Rome, Pompeii, Naples, Sorrento and Capri. In 6 days. Hmm.... I can see me having to cut that list shorter and shorter as time wears on, unfortunately. Never mind, if I see even half of an itinerary like that, I'll be a happy woman.
I have eaten Pizza (without cheese), strolled along Ponte Vecchio, circumnavigated inumerous Florentine Piazzas and queued for hours to see Michelangelo's David so I feel that I can safely say I've done Firenze. Time to move on.
Pisa here I come :-)
