Idaho to Oregon
Again another early start, as we had an approximate 7 hour drive to our camp for 2 nights in Oregon, at Diamond lake near the Crater Lake national park.
We set off and the drive was similar at the start to yesterday’s, as we passed through Idaho.
Once we crossed over into Oregon, we lost an hour ( Mountain time changed to Pacific time) but the scenery became less green and the horizon seemed much closer, less plain more rugged.
The weather also improved markedly as we went along, ending up in the high seventies Fahrenheit.
We were following highway 20 for most of the way, which was following the old Oregon trail, used by the settlers moving to the old west.
We stopped at a town called Bend, to eat at at a restaurant called the Apple Peddler.
It was about 11.30, a little early by normal standards, but we had lost an hour, so our stomachs thought it was 12.30.
The restaurant was one of those old independent places that you think of when you think about small town America. Not pretty to look at but hearty food at a great price.
After eating our lunches we continued on for about another 160 miles.
The camp at Diamond lake, was a much more rustic affair than the others we had stayed at.
Set in the woods, it was a short walk to the lake.
We had picked up some supplies before we left Boise, so as the weather was nice , we set the grill up to grill hotdogs and have pasta salad and rice with it, using the supplies and leftovers from previous days.
After a great alfresco meal, we went down to the lake to walk Nate and watch the Sunset over the lake and the orange and pinks it make on the hills behind.
Tomorrow was Crater lake touring.
*note - the only disadvantage of this camp site was no internet access and the forest blocked the phone networks, so blog updating has got a little behind.
I have kept the notes offline and will update when we move to the Oregon coast on the 22nd.
