So Germany ended a couple of weeks ago but I was fortunate enough to be able to spend 3 weeks there. I actually nearly missed my flight as at the hostel they told me to leave at least 1 hour to get there, so i was like ok i'll leave 2hours just incase. However, even with 2hrs, as it was the first day in Paris for the winter this year that there was insane snow, the train was super slow and I was still on it 15 mins before check in closed!!! I freaked out and got off the train at a random stop, ran with my giant bag to the nearest taxi...all in the snow which was super slippery, and then it turned out that there was a crash on the motorway from the snow, and all the traffic was moving at 20kmph!!!! The taxi was even slower than the train!!! I arrived at the airport at 10.20am when my flight was at 10.20am!!! Luckily the flight was delayed from the snow but they still wouldnt let me on coz everyone elses luggage had already ben sent away and they dais they couldnt check my stuff in. I had to beg about 7 other ppl and finally one lady sorted my stuff out!! I arrived in Munich 3 hours late...my poor friend Adriana who I hadnt seen for over 3 years since I was in Mexico was waiting all that time..and to make it worse, it was her birthday!!
After all that though I went with her to her german class...was interesting to try and understand. I met the German family she was staying with and they were all really nice..although I was a little shocked when even on my first night there they were having a conversation about hitler!!
The day after I arrived Adriana had her bday party and we went to a Latino Bar...was really fun. Then we continued the after party at her friends house playing a tequila game...though i tried to refuse at first. The next morning we had a yum as mexican brekkie...reminds me of when i was in mexico!!
Then i met Adrianas bf and his family and we went to dinner at their place. They were also really welcoming and the Dad fed us lots of alcohol!!! It was fun as though, dancing and all at their house to Latin American music lol. The only downside was that we thought one of their parents was gonna drive us home but then because theyd drunken also..we had to walk, at midnight in the snow...and at 5PM that afternoon it was -14.5 degrees!!! Luckily because we'd had a few drinks then we didnt feel the cold as much and even stopped to take snow photos, but it seemed crazy at the time!
The next few weekdays I went to Adrianas German class too, and to the Spanish class she was giving. Then her course finished for Christmas, and we went to a whole bunch of places. I got to meet her Grandma, and some family friends who we spent the 23rd and 24th with and Christmas Day. We went to mass at 10pm even on Christmas Eve, but I didnt understand anything..and I just sang the Christmas carols I recognised but in English instead. There were like 5 families that I met there and they all gave me Christmas prezzies even though I didnt know them...they were so lovely!!!
We went to a restaurant for lunch on Christmas Day and even had aperitifs...or one for the road as they say! Then at night was another dinner party at Adrianas bfs house and that went well too...not that we had room to eat much!! Then the following 2 days were more Christmas meals with Adrianas german host family and another family friend...so all went well.
And before Christmas too we got to go to a Medieval Christmas market which was interesting...and all the traditional foods and hot wine etc was there. The place called Marienplatz was really pretty and the buildings near there all old and the architecture so pretty. There was also a little town nearby which I cant remember the name of! but its where hitler started all his takeover of the jews...and its where he committed suicide too, but youre not allowed to go there to see. The town though is the prettiest town ever..and all the buildings painted a different colour and with a lake and all.
New Years Eve was interesting. We arrived back late in the arvo from Austria but didnt know that the night trains back into Munich followed a different timetable. We arrived at the train station and turned out that the next train didnt come until 11.56pm!!! So therefore we brought in the new year on the train of all places! Kinda lame but we got to see lotsa pretty fireworks on the way back into town. We got into the Latinos bar club again and it was fun as...and we even managed to get in free which is not usually possible!! We stayed until about 4ish and then were gonna stay the night at a girl Sammys house. But man the streets everywhere were a dump when we went outside. There were firework wrappers literally everywhere and theres no alcohol ban on the street so there were smashed bottles everywhere...even on the train and all that...ive seriously never seen anything like it! Getting a taxi back to Sammys place was a mision...we had to take a bus about 20mins away from downtown and then run in the middle of the road to get one...there were tonnes of them about but none free!
Then the last interesting thing I did there was that we went to this castle called Neuschweinstein or something like that. Its in the alps about an hour and a half from Munich and its the model for the Disneyland castles. It was super pretty there and theres another castle right beside it to. The only lame thing was that I underestimated how cold it would be in the mountains with all the snow etc...and I was already sick at that stage!!! Was a good day though.
Ive gottta say though that Germany is probably the coldest place Ive been...the first 4 or 5 days the high was -5 degrees celsuis and often with snow at least 10cm deep. The only time there wasnt snow was at Christmas!!!
Was great to spend time with Adriana though after all this time and speak some more spanish and try to in german...although when i spoke i wasnt well understood!!! I could understand a reasonable amount though.
Then on the 4th Jan it was back to Paris where I am now =)
