As promised in our last blogpost (Boston) we've added details of how we're
getting around/where we staying and what we've booked/planning to head
to. The only way we could keep these on the blog was to keep them in
the good ol' Jozi (Johannesburg) link under the blogpost listing...so please
check in there for regular updates as we trek through the world - we hope they help the budding tour planners out there! We have also added a Facebook page for this blog: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mlungu-Trek-Brett-and-Darren-on-tour/222580507752515?sk=wall - please click on the above link and like our page as this will help in sending notifications of updates to our blog.
Continuing from our last mentioned stop, Boston, we hopped on an overnight 2am, 9hr bus ride, to Atlantic City. Neither of us had been to the Vegas of the East and for this reason we chose it over other stops like Philli (of Fresh Prince fame). We caught Atlantic City on a midweek break imagining a droog midweek Sun City kind of vibe and weren't disappointed when we realised that we were definitely bringing down the average age of our fellow patrons at the Trump Plaza by a good 40 years...for our fellow actuarial readers, we were definitely
the outliers. This outlook changed from droog to dingy when we walked the boardwalk which, though set in a great setting aside the beach, was filled with $1 stores, take out pizzerias and lots of people that probably lost their money and haven't managed to get out of town. The crowd did pick up a bit more and we were seeing more tourists. But, when the sky fell dark, our expectations were blown to pieces. With a little guidance from our waitress at Hooters (yep, we had to do it) we were pointed towards Mur.Mur at the Borgata hotel and were shocked to find a 2hr queue of down-to-party college students and other fellow Jersey locals. We left shocked and appalled that we couldn't get in wearing our cool tshirts and takis...don't worry, we didn't wait in the queue to figure this out...and rather enjoyed some good live rock n roll at another bar in the hotel.
So recharged with party enthusiasm we hit the streets the next day to buy us a pair of the anti-backpack item...smart shoes. Turns out that Atlantic City is really good for shopping and most major labels have factory outlets in the city which
coupled with 0% sales tax, it's a pretty good place to shop. $20 each later we had a pair of slick kicks and were ready for Tuesday night at Dusk in Caesars Hotel. Funny story - when we called to see if we could get on the guest list, we were greeted by friendly American-accented-ex-safrican-local club ambassador Justin from Mossel Bay. After recognising our accents, he put us on the list and showed us some homely hospitality with a round of drinks at the bar. The
party at Dusk was good and sent us off to Washington with a hang-over but fortunately no scars or credit problems.
Trek on...Brett and Darren
